1705 dated Dutch medal Netherlands, Pieter Codde, 1705 Medal Pieter Codde (Coddaeu) Archbishop of Sebaste, Vikaris in the Netherlands. Composition: Silver Weight: 37.8g Diameter: 43.9mm (unsigned). Obverse: Bust facing right Reverse: Lightning from the Vatican aimed at lamb who has his foreleg on book titled RESP.(ONSIONES)(translated as "Answers")is destroyed by other lightning from the clouds. In the left foreground the Dutch lion with sword and bundle of arrows. Van Loon IV, 467. Pieter Codde was a big supporter of Jansenism which was a controversial religious movement during the 17th and 18th centuries in Roman Catholic history. Jansenism arose out of the theological problem of reconciling divine grace and human freedom and emphasized original sin, human depravity, the necessity of divine grace, and predestination. He was suspended from his office in 1702 by Pope Clement XI due to this. A very impressive medal full of interesting symbolism. And one of the most important (to me) items in my collection. The first Wildman coin I ever purchased.
