It is possible to establish the chronology of type R42 by checking the degree of die polishing. Pieces were struck in several finishes, such as:</p><p>a gilt Peck 1052</p><p>[ATTACH=full]1591601[/ATTACH]</p><p><br /></p><p>bronzed copper Peck 1053</p><p>[ATTACH=full]1591602[/ATTACH]</p><p><br /></p><p>Another bronzed copper Peck 1053, but an earlier strike.</p><p>[ATTACH=full]1591603[/ATTACH]</p><p><br /></p><p>a brass Peck 1055</p><p>[ATTACH=full]1591604[/ATTACH]</p><p><br /></p><p>And this is the die that the R42 was re-engraved from, an R41 Peck 1051. The obvious differences are the single strand of hair on the neck which points in the opposite direction, but has in fact been completely re-engraved and the curls below the bust. Traces of the curls seen below the truncation are visible on the earlier strike Peck 1053 above, which was probably the reason NGC called that coin a P1051, despite not being one.
