This coin is no longer politically correct. ... Lunatic Hospital? ... Erected by subscription? ... Guess they had their "well to do" Lunies.

A private token issued by James Burleigh which featured Hobson's livery stable.

A Hobson's choice is a free choice in which only one thing is offered. Because a person may refuse to accept what is offered, the two options are taking it or taking nothing. In other words, one may "take it or leave it". The phrase is said to have originated with Thomas Hobson (1544–1631), a livery stable owner in Cambridge, England, who offered customers the choice of either taking the horse in his stall nearest to the door or taking none at all.

Very true, however very interesting and of historical note. Besides, it has long legged birds on it and who doesn't like those ;).

Crestfallen that I missed the opportunity to post my 1806 gilt proof halfpenny from the Eclectic Box earlier, I was happy to see @yarm (who sold me the gilt proof) post his own even more impressive 1799 gilt proof farthing pattern in Post #1867 above.

    It's time for 1798, I think!

This remarkably well preserved 1798 Draped Bust cent (Sheldon-166; note the telltale reverse die crack) is one of several amazing 1798 cents found in this coastal Georgia locale by my metal detecting buddies. (I mysef have dug only one DB cent, and it is a completely corroded slug. Soil conditions vary widely on these relic hunting sites.)

I was watching for your gilt halfpenny post. When you didn't post, I thought you either dropped out, or @yarm stole your thunder.

Here's a 1798 penny from the Isle of Man. Interesting sidenote: The adjective for Isle of Man is "Manx" and someone from there is a Manxman. 1798 isle of man 1 penny.jpg

1798 (and 1797) is one if those years that supposed to be very common, but surprisingly difficult to find in unmesses-with high AU / MS.
