"What is the story?"

The end of the 18th century was a period of political turmoil in England as well as France. This token falls into the category of political messaging, condemning those who would attempt to overthrow the government using grotesque symbolism.

Lots of Soho halfpennies here for me, so a small selection only to alleviate viewers' boredom.

A double reverse type R28 in bronzed copper (P1023). Ex Rogers, Norweb and Selig collections and possibly the only example available to collectors. Previously in a 64 slab.


A gilt restrike type R12 (P992). Ex-Whetmore (1943)


A silver restrike type R44 using the 1795 obverse mule with the 1790 reverse. Unknown to Peck in this metal.

A late Soho bronzed copper type DH15 (P974A).

1790, by Lewis Pingo. BHM 344 encapsulated in a contemporary "slab".



According to Brown, Pingo received the commission for this medal from the recently formed Church and King Club consisting of the most "responsible and opulent neighbouring gentlemen" in Manchester to celebrate the defeat of the Dissenters in Parliament.
