I have a question about the German language that I'm hoping someone can answer - I suspect it will be wittwolf or panzerman. It's about the Z. or zur. Okay, so we have Prince Paul of Lippe, right? Not Prince Paul from Lippe, correct, which would be Prince Paul von Lippe, or von der Lippe? So Lippe is a city? Eine Stadt? So to make that dative, we get zu der Lippe, or zur Lippe. Is that correct? Just trying to wrap my head around German case and conjunctions. Please and thank you.

I didnt think about this topic to much yet but now tried to figure it out. So the name "zu" refers to the place the noblemen is residing at. That means Prince Paul (who is residing at = zur) Lippe. Most of the times this name refers to the home castle of the noble house but in the case of Lippe is seems to refer to the terretory the Lords of the House Lippe ruled over at least since the early 12th or late 11th century (earliest mentions). If there had been a castle of Lippe it seems history has forgotten about it. The name "von" means "born at" or "coming from". In some cases the name von will be combined with the name zu. I cant tell you why Prince Paul is not called Paul von und zur Lippe but a possible reason I can imagine is that the first Lord of Lippe didnt originate at the territory of Lippe.
