I thought that was a clipped planchet at first. Now I assume it is a dark stain on the coin rather than a shadow on the photo.

Undated, but 1888. A lead splash of the obverse die used for the 1888 pattern crown (cf. ESC2670 (old 357)) which is paired with a regular G&D reverse. Somewhat cheaper than spending 20K on one of the 4 silver examples known, one without signature on the truncation and 3 with. This will have been made before the die was hardened. There appears to be a trace of an inked 88 on its side just in from the dark patch at 4 o'clock on the blank side.

1887 pattern halfpenny with a milled edge, struck by Lauer for Adolph Weyl. This is struck in tin and is one of many coins with the erroneous reference as being struck in aluminium. See my article in the 2011 BNJ.
