I imagine it acquired the wear from duty as a pocket piece or just being handled a lot? I just weighed it as 9.7 grams and 25.5mm Diameter. A shilling in 1897 is listed in Numista as being 5.66 grams and 23.5mm D. I see the specs for this medal: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/exonumia11590.html
So you are quite correct that it does not correspond to a shilling or florin in size or weight, though the purity is the same at .925. I had honestly never wondered how neither this one, nor any of my other similar medals got their wear. Apparently it was not tucked away in pristine condition and stored perfectly for the past 125 years.

ZAR 1896. The first gold colored one is just a fake token of some kind.

Since I seem to have only five 1896s, I'll go all the way!

First a good old Morgan dollar.
    dollar-01-1896-km110-vam1B.jpg

    Then a British farthing . . . farthing-01-1896-km788.1.jpg

Then a British penny - not sure why obverse is large and the reverse is so small. Great Britain-penny-01-1896-km790.jpg

    A Swedish ten-ore. ore-10-1896EB-km755.jpg

and finally a British three pence that's been around the block. At least twice. pence-03-1896-km777.jpg
