    Just got home from work...
AV Sultani AH 974 =1566 Bagdad Mint
    Selim II 1566-74

Note: Selim was a useless Sultan/ Sulieman the "Magnificent" had his eldest son (Mehmed) lined up as his sucessor. However, smallpox caused his early death, the second in line (Mustafa) was executed on trumped up charges, rumours spread by Selim's Mother, that he was plotting a coup against his Dad. The third in line (Bayezid) was murdered on Selim's orders. Thus began the downfall of the mighty Ottoman Empire.

Another modest coin to follow Panzerman's beautiful (if inscrutable) gold

1565 Italy CASALE Margarita Paleologo & Guglielmo Gonzaga Bianco

Guglielmo Gonzaga aucceeded his elder brother Francesco III as Duke of Mantua in 1550 at the age of 12 and ruled under the regency of his mother Margarita Paleologo until 1556. She continued to rule jointly with him in Casale-Montferrat until her death in 1566 since as a Paleologo she was the direct heir in Montferrat. The Greek imperial Paleologo (or Palaiologos) family ruled Montferrat from 1305-1533 when, with no male heir, Emperor Charles V seized it and gave it to the Gonzagas.

I hope its OK to go to 1564.

AV Dukat 1564 K-B Kremnitz Mint
    Ferdinand I 1526-64
King of Hungary (Holy Roman Emperor from 1558-64) after Karl V retired from post in 1558. After the Battle of Mohacs in 1526, where the Ottoman Army commanded by Sulieman the Magnificent, annilhilated the Hungarian forces, led by Louis II (who was killed) In the aftermath, Ferdinand appointed himself as King of a devastated Hungary, while the Transylvanian Prince John Zapolya claimed the same title. Over the next decades, John and Ferdinand fought a series of battles, but nothing was decided. a9d3f6df6c70b7bebbc866fa311ff3d5.jpg

For once I have a coin which glitters like panzerman's, although the Austrians struck a higher quality coinage than the French at that time

1564 FRANCE Charles IX Ecu d'or au soleil

France Chas IX Ecu d'or au soleil 1564 obv 673.jpg France Chas IX Ecu d'or au soleil 1564 rev 674.jpg

And here is another Ferdinand I issue, but of not great quality:

    AUSTRIA-HUNGARY Ferdinand I Guldentaler (60 Kreuzer) Contemporary
copy probably struck in the Balkans for trade with the Ottoman Empire. Face and lettering somewhat different to regular issues struck in Hall

Austria Hungary copy of Ferd I Hall 60 Kreuzer 1564 obv 813.jpg

    AV Dukat 1564 Danzig Mint
Sigismund II August 010200fbc31ccab6ddb4cd7a3c2b25fe.jpg of Poland They sure made beautifull coins back in 64:happy: Too bad the mints today strike such bland material.

You guys are right! I must have had a "brain cramp" sorry about the confusion:shame::shame::shame::shame::shame::shame::shame::shame::shame: I will repost it when we get to 54! Maybe, it was the fact that I froze my face off, while taking my Rottie for his walk, it was -16 windchill, and we are getting more snow on Friday. January weather in November;)

Another pair of eagle eyes on this thread ! It's good we have you to keep us up to the mark. What is your source for the precise dates of the crown/coronet mm ? I have the years but not the precise dates.
