1573 (but also 1551) Germany LUBECK/SAXONY Mule Taler (contemporary forgery)

This is a crazy coin. Some not very literate or not very attentive coin forger got his dies mixed up. The obverse is a copy of a 1573 Taler of the city of Lubeck (Dav.9409v) while the reverse is a copy of a 1551 Moritz of Saxony Taler (Dav.9787v).

1572 Another coin of the Dutch War of Independence

MIDDELBURG Daalder Uniface Siege Klippe (36 stuiver)

When Philip II discovered that William the Silent, to whom he had given the governorship of several provinces, was leading a conspiracy against him, he stripped him of his holdings. In response William raised an army, and with the Watergeuzen (Sea Beggars) attacked coastal towns held by the Spanish, an opening phase of the 80 Years' War for Dutch independence. His forces laid siege to Middelburg in the province of Zeeland in 1572. The city eventually surrendered in 1574.

1571 Spanish Netherlands UTRECHT (still ruled by Spain)
Philip II Medallic 2 Ducaton to commemorate the victory over against the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto.

This is the last of 3 coins that I bought that were inspired by this thread. I expect that this will be my last entry.

Goodness, ladies and gentlemen. It's been some nine days. Has nobody a 1571? I, most sadly, do not. I'm sitting here just waiting for 1567. Patiently. Very, very patiently. I hope everyone is doing better than well.

I think we are actually looking for 1570. Talerman shared a 1571.

I have a 1519 waiting, though it is beginning to look like we may not make it to there.

Ah good - I can contribute for one. Not the greatest coin but here is an Elizabeth I 1569 Sixpence to keep us moving:

1568 Another 4 Mark Klippe from Sweden but this one issued jointly by Dukes Johan and Karl in the short interregnum after the deposition of their half-brother, King Erik XIV, on grounds of insanity, in September 1568. (He would die in captivity in 1577, probably poisoned with arsenic mixed in his pea soup). All three were the sons of Gustav Vasa. Johan had the title of Duke of Finland and Karl Duke of Sudermannia. In January 1569, Johan was recognized as king by the same riksdag that had forced Erik off the throne. Karl would succeed him as King Karl XII in 1592.

Panzerman always has the most beautiful coins but here are two more modest 1567 issues

1567 Netherlands Joint Issue of cities of DEVENTER, KAMPEN & ZWOLLE
1/2 Eagle Rijksdaalder with title of Emperor Maximilian II

1567 Italy PIACENZA Ottavio Farnese & son Alessandro Parpagliola

These low value coins were struck in the name of Ottavio and his son to facilitate small trading from 1565 after the Anziani, the senior citizens who were the political authority when the duke was absent, had requested and obtained the right to strike them to a value of 3000 scudi. Alessandro continued to have them struck after the death of his father and his son Ranuccio continued to strike them until 1609. In 1583/4 numerous counterfeits were struck, principally by the mints of Desana and Frinco.

That jumped on suddenly! I can do 1566 with this Elizabeth I threepence - quite a nice one:
1566 3D 4.JPG 1566 3D 3.JPG This one caused a bit of a stir amongst the Hammered coins collectors in the UK and has now gone off to one of them. The mintmark of a lion struck over a Rose is very scarce and only the second such recorded apparently. I am glad it has gone to someone who appreciates it!
