Wonder if old Gabe had anyone "done in" for that head shot, or if he said "gee, what a great likeness"? Probably the latter!:smuggrin::smuggrin:

Finally! We get to a year I can do something with. Not a lot of 'something' but something nonetheless! For your viewing enjoyment, a 1611 Saxony Albertine line one thaler; KM# 44. If I remember correctly, John George (obverse) and his brother were co-rulers.

In hand, this isn't quite as dark as the picture shows although it is heavily toned. KM# 24. Saxony Thaler similar to the one posted by D E A above.

Obverse: Bust right with sword and helmet divide date
    Reverse: Busts facing one another

Ruler: Christian II, Johann Georg I and August
    Note: Dav. 7566.

That is a real beauty, especially for being so old. I see it appears to be slabbed, may I ask the grade? I will guess MS60

Actually, NGC tagged it with an XF Details (tooled) grade. The good part of that is that it made this an affordable coin for me. I'm not sure what they dinged it for, there is nothing obvious to my amateur eyes. I have a lot of details coins from this era so it doesn't bother me as long as it is still attractive.

Here are (much less dramatic and spectacular than the above) two Dombes liards : 1611 for Marie de Montpensier and 1610 for Henri II de Montpensier (deceased 1608 but there are some posthumous strikes)

Great coin, talerman! I'm interrupting the flow to only remark that I am reading a bit about soon-to-be Emperor Matthias. One of our prior posts (maybe this one?) made me aware of my too large ignorance of the Thirty Years War. So I obtained a history of it by Cecily Victoria Wedgwood, which she wrote in the early 20th century. Good read!

    Back to the game!

Great book ( I think the author is actually Cicely Veronica Wedgwood). The Thirty Years' War was (like many wars) a senseless tragedy which devastated Germany but it did leave us many interesting coins.
