Louis XIV, 1/12 écu, 1649-A, Paris mint. This is (and probably will be) my only Louis XIV coin. It was purchased on a trip to Paris, and I think it was one of my best purchases in terms of price. I absolutely love it, and I don’t even want another coin of his entire reign! 592DEFD7-21B2-4EA3-B140-BD66548FF025.jpeg DCD4F53D-F7EF-403A-BAB1-C6232F30D157.jpeg

Does anyone know what the mintmark at the top of the reverse of semibovinian's Danish 2 skilling, on the right of 1648, is called in English ? In German it is Zainhaken and I believe it is a mint tool. I have never found the correct English translation.

I'm not sure there is an equivalent tool in English mints. I looked up via google and discovered the "Zaine" is the red hot rod of metal produced in the mint on the way to making coins, and the "Haken" is for hook. I do not know of a specific English word for the Zaine - the general word for pieces of metal in a process is "billet" so I would suggest "billet-hook" is probably the closest you will get. I suppose "ingot-hook" is possible but sounds ungainly. There is the word "billhook" which is a curve-bladed hand axe used for trimming wood.

OK, thanks. The person I bought it from identified it as Livonia.

Thank you. Billet hook sounds good. However, I then went to see if I could find the term in a little book I have on minting, Coins and Mining by Denis Cooper, and I may have found the answer to my own question - see pictures below. I don't know why I had not noticed them before. Hinged coin dies 488.jpg Coin Production at Halle, 16th cent 489.jpg I am still confused. How exactly did one strike coins with a hinged coin die ? Also, the second picture shows a similar tool on the left used for cutting blanks.

Although Riga issued its own city coinage, it was the largest city in Livonia (roughly today's Latvia and Estonia) so he was not really wrong
