With the emperors thread teetering to a close and me having just won a wonderful lot, from Tauler & Fau, of Gallienus zoo/beast coins, I thought it would be fun to see how close we can get to filling Gallienus Zoo! As you all probably know, Gallienus zoo coins, coins minted under the man with his and his wife's image on the obverse and animals and mythical creatures on the reverse, are one of the most popular (and affordable) collecting nitches in the hobby! Here's how it will work: We have the list of critters below, supplied by the wonderful, CT Rookie of the year, @DonnaML (whom has some wonderful creatures of her own that I hope will be shared!), from @Roman Collector's thread on the numbered officianae https://www.cointalk.com/threads/numbered-officinae-on-the-rome-mint-issues-of-gallienus.358895/ Post as many as you would like, but if you have one that hasn't been shown please highlight or bold the type so we can keep track and mark it off the list. Centaur walking left holding globe Centaur walking right with bow and arrow Centaur galloping right, with bow and arrow held up to sky Gryphon walking left Gryphon walking right Gryphon seated left Antelope left Antelope right Doe left, head turned back to right Doe right, head turned back to left Stag left Stag right Gazelle left Gazelle right Lion left Boar right Goat left Goat right Panther left Panther right, "rampant" (head facing upwards) [No mention of tigress, but he does give examples of a striped big cat left, which he identifies as a "lioness"] Criocampus [mythical beast with head and forelimbs of ram, and body and rear of fish] swimming right Hippocamp [head and forelimbs of horse, body and rear of fish] swimming left Hippocamp swimming right Capricorn [head and forelimbs of goat, body and rear of fish] swimming right Pegasus left, rearing up on hind legs Pegasus right, rearing up on hind legs Bull standing left Bull standing right Antelope left [different officina from earlier antelope] Antelope right [ " " " ] I will get the ball rolling with a real dog that I got from that lot of 17 coins for 30 bucks (before shipping) that is the second hardest of the series to come by (something like less than half of a percent are of the boar)! Gallienus, A.D. 253-268. Æ Double Denarius. Rome, A.D. 267/8. Radiate head of Gallienus right. Rv. HERCVLI CONS AVG, Calydonian boar standing right; E. 4.2 gr, 22mm, RIC 202. Göbl 729b. RSC 317. The second toughest of Gallienus' CONS AVG series to acquire. Ex: Tauler & Fau I wonder how many types we can mark off the list? DO we combined have all of them???
This was supposed to be together with my response; see my next post. How they got separated into two posts, I have no idea!
Thanks for the compliment, @Ryro! My suspicion is that we won't come close to completing the list, which has 31 different types on it including the tigress. I compiled the list from the Wolkow book; see my note below. (Now, if you were asking about the Philip I and family zoo, it would be a different story, although it might be more difficult if we had to supply all the different animals as sestertii as well as antoniniani.) In any event, I have only three: the tigress left, the doe right looking back to the left, and the gazelle right. I have a centaur walking left with globe on my watch list on VCoins, but haven't pushed the button yet. The problem is that it's so hard to find these in nice condition, even the common ones. The zoo series is a little heavy in the hooved beasts, so I'll get the ball rolling with stags -- walking left and walking right! DIANAE CONS AVG
Unfortunately, I can't see the officina numbers on some of these, so it's difficult to tell whether the second and fourth ones are supposed to be antelopes or gazelles (although I suspect that # 2 is an antelope and # 4 is a gazelle). The first one is a panther, and the third is probably a stag.
Nice idea for a thread, here are mine Wolkow # 2a7 Wolkow # 4aa4 Wolkow # 7a3 Wolkow # 10a5 Wolkow # 13a12 Wolkow # 17a6 Wolkow # 18a6 Q

Stag left Goat right Hippocamp right Panther left Gryphon left Centaur left and one barbarous antelope left? Do you want Gallienus animals not from the series attaching them to a god?
Wonderful assortment Doug. If you have some examples, I'd love to see them. The more the merrier! This zoo is filling up quick I don't think I've seen a left (thanks Donna!facing doe looking over its shoulder yet:
Number 2 could be a goat, but I'm pretty sure that number 4 is not a stag, or it would have branched antlers like your number 3. It looks more like my gazelle.
I can't add anything not already shown but will pop these into the thread anyway . For anyone who doesn't have Wolkow's book (and I would guess that not too many people in the USA or UK have it), this is what the Wolkow numbers in @Cucumbor's two posts signify -- although of course most are self-evident: Wolkow # 2a7 Centaur right with bow and arrow, Officina 7, Apollo Wolkow # 4aa4 Gryphon left with IMP GALLIENVS AVG obv. legend, Officina 4, Apollo Wolkow # 7a3 Antelope left, Officina 3, Diana Wolkow # 10a5 Doe right with head turned back, Officina 5, Diana Wolkow # 13a12 Gazelle left, Officina 12, Diana Wolkow # 17a6 Goat left, Officina 6, Jove Wolkow # 18a6 Goat right, Officina 6, Jove Wolkow # 19a2 Panther left, Officina 2, Liber Wolkow # 21a8 Criocamp right, Officina 8, Mercury Wolkow # 23a9 Hippocamp right, Officina 9, Neptune Wolkow # 26a1 Pegasus right, Officina 1, Sol Wolkow # 29aa4 Antelope left, Obv. legend COR SALONINA AVG, Officina 4, Juno
