I'm with Doug-- looks like a tigress to me. Those are some pretty purposeful-looking stripes. So you can retain your Best Panther In Show title, John
That's an outstanding reverse! Steve's is not the worst I've seen but it is funny how some of the more worn ones look rather like monkeys. Yours is all panther/tiger though .
Eh...I like the stripes on yours better. Actually, it's the first time I've seen the stripes on these coins. It makes me wonder if the engravers were intentionally portraying different kinds of cats. We've all become accustomed to calling them panthers, but as Doug points out, are they all panthers?
Here's a better picture of my Gallienus/tigress. The obverse isn't quite as horrible as it first seemed. I bought a different lamp and made some adjustments to the camera settings.
Well, I'm not drawn to coins of John Anthony so there you go. Wait are there even any coins of John Anthony around? I don't suppose you have any idea how hard it is to make coins when most of your Empire is in revolt? First my father, Valerian, gets captured by the Persians, then the NW part of the Empire revolts under Postumus in 260 and also the Palmyrene Empire to the East broke off under Zenobia, although it did serve it's uses in the fight against Sassinid Persia. Yes, Yes, I know I need to get an impressive coin of myself for an avatar but they are very hard to find. Fact is, I think my solidii are among the most innovative and the most common 3rd century gold out there. They're still too pricey for me to buy tho I did try. Also I made some medallions denoted "For those who remained faithful" (i.e didn't revolt & proclaim themselves Emperor) but they're quite hard to find. I even made a smattering of heavy weight bronze sestersii; not that anyone cares about those. Finally to make the Senate happy I made some double sestersii.
Actually, since I made that post, almost a year ago, I've discovered a wealth of interesting coinage in Gallienus and other 2nd-century emperors. Just goes to show: never say you're not interested in some coins today, because you may be tomorrow.
