Silver washed coin (AR Antoninianus) minted at during the reign of GALLIENUS between 253 - 268 A.D. Obv. GALLIENVS.AVG.: Rev. PROVIDIA.AVG.: Providence standing l., holding globe & sceptre, in ex. SPQR. Is this a common coin, can someone help me date this coin and give me some information.
I think it is like this one - with SPQR in exergue https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=31950 https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=31019 These 2 examples have nothing in exergue. In RIC it mentions SPQR in exergue and it is listed as common (but this was discussed on CT and RIC doesn't help much with rarity degrees for Gallienus) Although the reverse legend is PROVID AVG, the character is Mercury - you can tell this from the purse and caduceus. I cannot find any example similar to yours being sold. Also I can't find it here. https://bnumis.com/gallienus.net/index.html In OCRE the examples listed have no exergue http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.5.gall(2).653 So I would assume it is quite rare.
It's PROVIDENTIA, not Providia. If you look carefully, you can see a trace of the ENT. From ACSearch, sold for $45, one of two examples, both sold for that price. Sold For $45 GALLIENUS. 253-268 AD. Antoninianus (21mm, 3.61 gm). Antioch mint. Struck 266-269 AD. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / PROVIDENTIA AVG, Mercury standing left, holding purse and caduceus. RIC V 653 var. (SPQR in exergue); MIR 36, 1651f; RSC 875. EF, silvered, slightly soft strike. Neither appears to show an SPQR in the reverse, even though it seems that's how it's described in RIC

A catalogue of the Gallienus Antoniniani collection of Frank Reinhardt, (Beachcomber), who died recently, is available at https://www.academia.edu/71026138/GALLI ... NIANII_PDF The catalogue was prepared by his friend José de Sousa, who promised him he would do a catalog of his collection, a catalog of his coins to share with friends.
Very interesting coin and a keeper for sure. As as matter of fact the upcoming Leu auction (already taking bids) features a great collection of the coins of Gallienus, with a huge variety of scarce types.
