I go to the coin shows in MA and CT. Some of the dealers buy old coins for melt. They say they sell to the jewelry makers in Providence, RI. But that is old silver. I don't know if they would want copper or nickle at all.
I phoned a metal reclamation center near me and they aren't accepting cents or nickels. The phenomenon of base metal coins being worth more than face value seems to be too new. So for now the melt value of the coins remains a theory and not a proven money making scheme unless you can write a convincing ad on Ebay and get someone to bid more than face value.
Yes, that of course, is true. I once saw someone sell an ordinary, circulated zinc Lincoln cent, on eBay, for several dollars. This auction just ended. If my math is right (and that's questionable LOL), the buyer wound up paying nearly 3 1/2 cents each for these. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8416896316
