I know some like to put the proofs in folders/albums, but I don’t any longer. I’ve found the mirrored fields do not fair well in these products. Now the Satins do great, with their “matte” finishes.

Yeah, you're right - the proofs get hazy. It's probably better to get IFC albums and keep proofs in airtites.

Yep, or leave them in the ogp.

My proofs have faired well in 2x2 and archival pages. I have a couple (nickels) so old the 2x2 has yellowed (must have mounted them 40+ years ago) and the surfaces are still nice and mirrored with no hazing.

I've never understood the interest in Dansco's in all these forums... I'd never be comfortable with valuable coins in one of those.

I think that it's just that they're attractive albums and people can't resist an empty hole in their albums.

Honestly, I too did it to complete the sets in the albums, but then sold the sets as I didn't think that they'd fare well in the albums long term.

I don't put valuable coins in albums, just interesting, cheap pieces. As far as proofs go though, the original packaging isn't always safe either - I've seen plenty of hazy proofs in unopened mint sets. So I'm not surprised that your proofs in 2x2's have survived so well. It probably depends more on general storage conditions.

I looked at the actual selling prices on eBay. I will admit I looked at the low mintage 95's and not the 96's but it was possible to get MS-69's in the $80 range. Well below the level of the Buffalos.

Yeah, I’ve seen the hazing in many different holders, but I’m talking more about the lint and other fibers that are next to impossible to get off the coin if putting in a folder/album or other holder. That lint really messes up a mirrored surface over time. Granted, you may get lucky and the coin’s mirrored fields will age well. But if the coin is in a good lint free holder, I leave it there.

not to mention the slide marks and hairlines that inevitably find their way onto coins in these albums and are especially apparent on proof coins.

I agree that the hazing and toning is almost entirely due to storage conditions with the exception of early 1970s Mint packaged proof coins. They seem to all have been prone to hazing and spots. The Mint has since made efforts to give you packaging that provides good long-term storage

To follow up on this, I think I heard PCGS classifies SP (Specimen) coins as proofs. Ever hear this or know how to check their listings?

I don't know, maybe you can check the registries. I do know this:

PCGS (@pcgscoin) includes the 1998-S Special Mint Set Kennedy Half Dollar to be a part of the Mint State coin registry set. NGC (@NGCcoin) includes it in the Proof coin registry set.

The more I see this thread, the more it makes me think that the 2009 High Relief one-ounce gold should be on there, but I do not know if it would be considered a commem or a one-off issue. Others no doubt have listed this coin previous to my writing this, but I have not gone through all the posts again to confirm. Regardless, the coin was executed wonderfully, has unusual dimensions for a US issue and is downside value backed by bullion. They were sold per contemporary demand, but I think they will always be very desirable.
