Ya know? You guys almost made me pull the trigger on this one. Then I got a grip on my emotions. I took a deep breath and said to myself, Green (I always address myself as Green when nobody's lookin'), do you collect Canadian issues? I answered 'no'. Am I schizophrenic?
It was very tempting to buy two sets. Wish my pockets were that deep. This is the first time that everything is .9999 silver, and the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 was a big one. I live in Maryland, and you can still feel the history. The white house was ransacked and almost burned to the ground. As far as Canada, and do not quote me, but I believe this was their version of the American Revolution. Back in the states you had Andrew Jackson making canal flanks in New Orleans, and over in Europe the Napoleonic Wars were in full swing. Just so much history.
If you guys are going to pull the trigger on this item, the cheapest I have seen it is at the Talisman online coin site (NOT their eBay site). It is 209.95 + 9.95 shipping = 219.90. TC
Hey, I don't collect Canadian issues either but sometimes something comes along that's worth broadening your horizons. FWIW, I started a thread about these over in the World & Anceints forum if you guys want to let this one get back to the original topic. Just thought it might not be fair to take over this whole thread with these as the saga unfolds. lol
they seem to be down to their last one "Canada 2012 8-Coin Double Dollar Pure Silver Proof Set with War of 1812 Bicentennial 200th Anniversary $1 Silver Proof Dollar w/ 24-Karat Gold Plating L1 (1 Available)" that is what you get when you try to add 2 to your cart
Now I'm thinking of picking one up after looking at the set. It does look nice but its a tad bit pricey. Still thinking though...
Francis Scott Key was at the bombardment of Fort McHenry and wrote The Star Spangled Banner in 1814 not 1812. We are commemorating the bicentennial of the Star Spangled Banner two years early. The obverse of the five dollar gold with the ship battle and the 1812-2012 is correct though for a War of 1812 Bicentennial.
The all silver Canada proof set with the gilt penny seems to be doing very well. That penny sells for half the cost of the set now. I really want to get hands on a mint issue price set of the 'Farewell to the Penny' five coin silver set....alas, I missed it and it sold out in no time flat. Ebay is doubling the price for those as of now.
Hey avr5700: Check this out. Hope it helps. I've dealt with these folks before and had no problems. http://www.talismancoins.com/servlet/Categories
I've been watching that site closely. Unfortunately (and expected), the moment it came back in stock (today), the price rose to match EBay at just over $300 delivered. Guess I'll just watch for the lul in the demand curve over the next few years...if there is one! Figure I might spring for just over $200, but that could be a long way off or never with this set.
I know this thread is old, but hey, it's still 2012. If I'm buying silver, I'd buy all the modern US dollar commems I could at melt. Most of the "uncirculated" versions (matte proofs) have low mintages that rival the classic commem half dollars and many are equally as beautiful and have the added desirability of being silver dollars. I usually buy several of each unc issue - I think a complete set of the uncs is 69 to date.
I hate the mint.... liars...in the last few years they runsales on mint and proof sets not mention all other products until they sell! what ever happened to the end of the year all sales are suspended? The 2012 ASE reverse proof ans s proof set was supposed to be a limited production. the s proof ase became avaialable in other products greatly diminishing the value! I think the best bet are the gold bufallo ;s
