Well thanks to your post I'm now down to beans and rice for the next month. All those 'firsts' and silver bug must have been the perfect pitch for me...bet I hold on to these for a long time though.
LOL! Sorry about that avr5700. Oh, I got a feeling you'll be quite pleased when you get your hands on this set. I'm sure tempted. Buying that might leave me with only Top Ramen noodles to eat. But ya know what, it just might be worth it. LOL.
That's true if by sales figures only "canada" residents purchases. There are lots of US collectors that soak up some of those mintages as well. Which make the 20000 a lot lower than it appears. Canadian coins in general are popular in a lot of countries, England and Australia in particular.
I just "soaked up" one of them myself. lol Couldn't resist. I kept thinking about how nice this set was all day and finally said screw it. Shnauzers just HAAAD to post this!! I've only got a couple Canadian coins in my collection (no proof sets) but this set was just too cool, being all silver with a lot of nice gold plating. 20k doesn't seem like a high mintage for what this set is, with worldwide interest. It'll be sold out before long. This will go good with our Star Spangled banner commems coming out this year.
No 100th aniversary of the Titanic coin? No 200th aniversary of war of 1812 coin? Whats the world coming to?---John
I'll get a star spangled silver proof or two. Nothing else really rings my bell so far, but I'm looking!
Technically, the Star Spangled Banner coin is a comemmorative of the War of 1812 in that Francis Scott Key was present at Fort McHenry during it's bombardment in 1812. He scribbled a poem describing what he had seen and later put it to a tune written in 1780. The final result is our National Anthem first published in 1814 and officially adopted in 1931.
It's a small world Vess. I was doing some late night work on the computer and ended up checking out that set on a couple occasions. I think it would be appropriate to pull the trigger later on tonight. Oh yeah!!
The Canadian sets also have a much larger premium over spot then American coins sold at the mint and collectors from other country's also buy U.S. coins.
I bought a set from the mint but there's a few showing up on ebay now. Some people have even split the sets up already. One's listed at $199. The rest are mint prices or higher. I guess I just wanted an unmolested set and I'll pay the $25 extra to have it. Sometimes its nice to get some issues straight from the mint. I don't know if this will be the hit of 2012 but I know I would never sell it for less than I paid for it. I'd bet a lot of collectors don't even know this set exists yet. I plan to be very happy with it from a collector's stand point. Might be interesting to start a thread over on the world coins side and see how many know about it over there. See what their opinion is. I think it's awesome.
This is a serious set in my opinion. The war of 1812 may not have appeared to be that big of a deal for America, but it was a huge deal for Canada. At 223 with taxes I was encouraged to buy a set. Not to flip, but for collecting purposes. Thank you for the post, had no idea it was comming out.
if i didn't blow $200 bucks on one of those ATB 5 oz coins, I might have picked this up.. still thinking about it though
found this info on a search... key quote that caught my eye ... "Update 2/9/2012: According to the Royal Canadian Mint, as of today only 8,000 sets are left." http://coins.about.com/b/2012/02/03/2012-canadian-silver-proof-set-shines-bright.htm What to do now... lol. probably buy a set in the coming hrs of the night.
Well, I just pulled the trigger and bought a set. Got mine thru Talisman Coins in St.Louis, MO. $229.00 and Free shipping. Scheduled for arrival to me here in Oregon February 17th or 18th. Found it on EBAY. The item counter said they have 1 left out of 5.
