FUN Show Roll Call

Discussion in 'Ancient Coins' started by Aidan_(), Jul 7, 2018.

  1. Believe it or don't, my first FUN Shows were back in the late-50s & early-60s in downtown Miami where my Dad had a table. I haven't been in years but on occasion I'll send something up for which I think FUN is the right market with a friend. For instance I've sent up with Florida Obsolete Currency Specialist John Yasuk an autograph item [a Gov. Reubin Askew TLS] which has a particular relevance to Obsolete Florida banknotes.

I'll be there on Thursday and probably Friday.

As to parking: make sure you tell the attendant you are going to the FUN show. You get lower rates than if you are attending any of the other shows that may be going on.

. When you've lived in Orlando for over 40 years you don't even notice it

I went to Summer Fun 3 years in a row between 2012-2014. Enjoyed it because of the novelty for me coming from Germany. Well attended and many dealers. However, it was 90% U.S coinage (and a large part of that were Morgans), and that was OK with me since I was looking to add to my U.S collection. Found one or two pieces.
I saw a limited number of dealers in foreign coins, and a handful only had ancients.
My overall impression was that I can do much better deals at shows in Europe, or at european auctions. That is why I stopped going.

U.S. shows, with a few exceptions like NYINC and a similar show near Chicago, are OVERWHELMINGLY U.S.-centric.

I've lived in SLC, so we get hot and cold. We tool my daughter to Orlando when she was 9. I told her she would get to feel humidity of r the first time. She asked me what it was, and I told her to wait. When we landed (it was 94 degrees) she asked me why she felt sticky. I said, "That's humidity!"

South Florida has nothing on Maracaibo, Venezuela. I came back to Utah in mid-July and had to wear a sweater at night and put a blanket on my bed - and we didn't have air conditioning!

@Aidan_() and I had a blast at FUN! There were 7 ancient coin dealers.

Generally, there are more than 7 really old dealers at a FUN show. What? Dealers of ancient COINS, you say? Hmm. Oh well, carry on.

@ancientcoinguru Wait a minute. I think I met you. What was your table? It didn’t hit me that the photo above was you.

I know a couple of the dealers on that list that will be perfectly capable of taking all your money without the help of six others. Enjoy the show.

I enjoyed Florida more before they built Disney and attracted all those people who needed air conditioning to enjoy themselves. Who remembers when a heater in a car was an option not everyone bought? Air conditioning?

Nothing wrong with that.........otherwise, 'fake news.......... devil.gif

  16. Not only do I remember what was a dealer aftermarket add-on, my first auto when I got married was a brand new 1971 Buick Opel 1900 Wagon to which we added a so-called "factory a/c". That meant it was a factory approved add-on that wouldn't void the warranty. We took that car with us to Grand Bahama, where it was our better/fancy vehicle.
A year later we brought over a 2nd auto, a 1969 Citroen Mehari which couldn't handle an a/c, especially since it was a two-cylinder cycolac-plastic body vehicle with stick shift coming out of the dashboard! A truly fun car for island living but a p.i.t.a. for servicing & obtaining parts.
And regarding before automobile heaters were standard, in addition to a 1915 Junior Klaxxonet horn which I have for sale, I also have an early 20th century portable auto brick-coal & kerosene foot-warmer (also for sale). Why does Sam_I_am have this weird stuff? Because Sidney at one-time collected antique autos, e.g., a 1918 Franklin, a 1917 Franklin, a 1911 White 7-Passenger Gasoline Touring Car and a 1910 Hupmobile (not all at one time!). Truly feels like a different lifetime ago.
