My own Theodosius III is a bit less impressive than those of @Voulgaroktonou! :shame:

    Artavasdus - nope! (@Voulgaroktonou?)

Someone else will have to do Constantine VI with Irene, and Irene's sole reign!

All fine coins, Severus Alexander! I love them! Here is an Artavasdus.
Artavasdus. Miliaresion. 1.73 gr. 21 mm. 11 hr. Sear 1545; DO 6; BNP 1. Elsen 125, lot 742. Sternberg 14 Nov. 1988, lot 585. Ex Henri Pottier collection.
    S1545.jpg
Graffiti on the reverse. I believe this is the first miliaresion we've come to, so until we reach the reign of Romanus I, our miliaresia will lack portraits. We'll have to content ourselves with the imperial names for the obverse and the cross potent on steps and IhSUS XRIS tUs nICA inscription on the reverse.

I do not have Artavasdus in gold, strangely preferring to feed my wife, children, 3 dogs and a horse for 2-3 years. Misplaced priorities, I know.

Some scholars tentatively assign to Artavasdus and his son Nikephorus a rare follis, which Grierson in DOC gives to Leo III and Constantine V. So perhaps I CAN offer a portrait of the usurper and his son...

Leo III (or Artavasdus?) Follis 2.61 gr. 21 mm. hr. 6. Sear 1515; DO 36. Ex Protonotarios collection. The reattribution was put forth by H. Pottier, "Restitution d’un follis à Artavasde, l’usurpateur usurpé (Constantinople 742/3), in Cercles d’Etudes Numismatiques, volume 26, 1989, no. 1. And looking at this photo once more, I see it is very poor. Sorry!

Here are a joint reign Irene and Constantine VI, followed by a sole reign Irene.
    Follis 2.76 gr. 19 mm. hr. 6. Constantinople 792-97. Sear 1598; DO 7; BNP 3-6; BM 10-11; R. 1779. T. 17-18. Berk/England Sale 12/7/1989, lot 308.

    Follis 5.59 gr. 25 mm. hr. 6. Constantinople 797-802. Sear 1600; DO 2; BNP 1-3; BM 2; R. 1781; T. 23-4. Ex Protonotarios collection.

The powerful personality of Irene had always overshadowed that of her son Constantine and only pressure from the army prevented her from taking power in 790. After a short period of exile, she returned to Constantinople and began eliminating her enemies. As the coinage shows, she quickly relegated her son to second place. By 797 she had managed to depose, blind, and eventually murder him. In 802 Irene herself was deposed after attempting to arrange a marriage between herself and Charlemagne.

What an amazing coin @Voulgaroktonou! Ex Pottier to boot!
Geez yeah. (I will keep it quiet so you don't get booted off CT Ancients. :D)

Wow - I will have to keep my eyes peeled for SB 1515. It always seemed odd to me that Artavasdus didn't strike any copper despite being in control of Constantinople for a year... I'll have to check out the Pottier paper if I can get my hands on it. The tricky bit, I guess, is reattributing DO 39 to Constantine V so the overstrikes fit the hypothesis. I would be convinced if I could see the wavy hair so characteristic of Artavasdus on his gold.

I love your sole reign Irene follis!

    Continuing a bit...

I love your 2 coins! I've got M & T, but will see whether anyone else posts. If you can't get Pottier's article online, let me know. I can get it for you once I get back in the office - in a few weeks, perhaps.

we are at a standstill. I am good when we get to 12th century but we a few hundred years to go.

Well, I have been trying to keep up. However, I honestly thought there were a lot more Romanoi collectors having much of the Emperors. I have enjoyed the progression. I have seriously considered capturing many of the Emperors as a complete collection (if ever possible), but have not mustered the Historical interest... too many other areas are of more interest to me.

I agree with @BenSi ... we seem to be at a standstill.

I will toss my last couple Romanoi Emperors in, in anticipation that the thread forges forward!

Yup, had to have a Scyphate, just to have one. :)

Yup, even had to have a SILVER coin when it seems Bronze and Gold (seems to always given as tribute to the "Barbarians") were the only coins minted... ummm, again, just to have one. :)

I'm sure @Voulgaroktonou will oblige us with his Michael I & Theophylactus. Meanwhile I'll forge ahead:

Michael III, the Drunkard 842-867 (geez, I need new photos of all of these):

Leo VI with Alexander (throughout Leo's reign):

I don't have Alexander as senior Augustus (912-913).

Zoe as Regent 914-919, with Constantine VII, Porphyrogenitus:

    Romanus I, Lecapenus 920-944:

Next should be a portrait of Constantine VII alone, towards the end of his reign, which I have but since I've reached my max of 10 images I will leave it for someone else to pick up! And hopefully someone has Romanus II, whom I lack...

Continuing my lonely Byzantine vigil in this thread...

Constantine VII (towards the end of his reign which ended in 959):

(I think @arnoldoe has a nice sole-reign portrait of Constantine VIII in gold.)

For Romanus III, Argyrus (1028-1034) I only have an anonymous follis:

    Same for Michael IV 1034-1041:

    And Constantine IX 1042-1055!

    Anybody have Isaac I Comnenus?

I skipped some rarities: Michael V 1041-42; Zoe & Theodora 1042; Theodora 1055-56; Michael VI 1056-57; and Eudocia alone 1067. Maybe @Voulgaroktonou can fill some of those in?

But I think we're now come far enough that @BenSi can take it away with Alexius I Comnenus! (I'm so excited!! :shame:)

Those are all great, @BenSi, but the Andronicus I is stunning! :wideyed:

I have bid on one or two Alexius IV w/ Isaac II (1203-1204) but was blown out of the water. But I can fill in Isaac, the usurper in Cyprus 1184-1191:

    Screen Shot 2020-06-16 at 8.45.51 PM.jpg

I can do OK with the Empire of Nicaea, but have only one from the Empire of Thessalonica. Does someone want to take those on before we get to the Palaeologan restoration?

Alrighty then, looks like it's up to me to bring this back to p. 1! :D

    Theodore I Comnenus-Lascaris (Empire of Nicaea) 1208-1222:

Theodore II Doukas-Lascaris (Empire of Nicaea) 1254-1258:
    Screen Shot 2020-06-17 at 9.46.46 PM.jpg

As I mentioned, I'm not well endowed with coins of the Empire of Thessalonica, I just have this weird flattened trachy of John Comnenus-Doukas (1237-1242):
    Screen Shot 2020-06-17 at 9.48.20 PM.jpg

Maybe someone else can fill in Theodore & Manuel of Thessalonica, and maybe also Michael II Angelos from the Despotate of Epirus.

But I'll continue with the Palaeologans. Here's my favourite Michael VIII Palaeologos (1261-1282), showing him holding the city of Constantinople after having retaken it from the nasty, brutish Latins:
    Screen Shot 2020-06-17 at 9.53.04 PM.jpg

    Andronicus II Palaeologos 1282-1328:

    w/ Michael IX:
    Screen Shot 2020-06-17 at 9.56.13 PM.jpg
    9021.56.89_1.jpg

    - put all three of those together and you get one good coin! :D

I have an Andronicus III, but no photo yet, so I'll stop there for now. I do not have John V or John VI, so someone else will have to look after those two. In fact the only two remaining emperors that I have are Manuel II and John VIII.
