The fact that it appears to still have a tiny bit of luster is mind blowing. Maybe that's just the photo, or the holder making it look that way. IDK how they grade these things. VF-25?
Looks like a great piece, and was a very nice find. You'll want to get the authenticity confirmed, of course, but based on my very limited experience, I don't see any obvious red flags there.
Update: Just recieved info that PCGS has graded my Fugio today and they are sending it back to me graded at AU50.
Okay, Fugio cents found with tokens in the bottom of an old toolbox are almost always replicas. Congratulations!
Thank you all for the replies. Coin shop offered me 1000.00 i said nope im just gona keep it for my kids..
I was surfing around to see what an AU 50 Fugio goes for and I think I saw similar for $2000. My grade was ridiculously low, but I believe they graded the Fugio on a curve. The very first photos are good, but the close ups show a lot of wear. If it was another later series it would have graded lower. I believe because most of the Fugios we see are G and VG, that this one got a higher grade in comparison, rather than if all different coin series were graded equally. That being said it is a fantastic coin and I wouldn't sell it either. It's worth every bit of $2000 or more, it is rare that you ever get an opportunity to buy a great coin like this.
I'm impressed! I should look in my toolbox, maybe I'll find a Continental dollar laying around A Fugio is high on my list but yours is way out of my league.
I hope your kids can appreciate the history behind this coin as well as the sheer beauty of the design! Love the Fugio.
I did read that for a fugio it is kind of rare to find a nicely centered strike which can help bring the grade up. This one is very nicely centered.
I would grade it XF-AU and get it authenticated by NGC. They have a true expert in colonial coins. I've seen weak strike colonials called MS60. So, I'd say it's worth the time and money to get it graded. That is definitely more than a $600 coin. Nice score!
