Hi to all An user of the Italian forum lamoneta.it, found a 1787 Fugio Cent in a junk box https://www.lamoneta.it/topic/161216-un-centesimo-americano/ In the Italian forum, we have many doubts about authenticity of this coin, we know that it's a rare coin, quite impossible to find by chance, expecially outside of US. But we aren't totally sure, so, I ask for your help Diameter is 28 mm., correct, weight 11.20 gr., maybe a bit high, but I found on the web other examples weighing more than 11 grams. Thanks to all petronius
I vote fake based on the story and the exquisite condition. Waiting to hear the experts... @jester3681 ?
Looks like a "modern" counterfeit; however, still worth something as a fake. Broken lower rings, thick edge, and surface quality all signs of C/F.
I am almost 100% sure that is a fake Fugio. The devices and legends are much too uniform and too defined, the fabric and look of the coin is not convincing. Fugios do not look like that. Have not tried to match it to one of the varies, but there is no need in my opinion.
I keep coming back and finding more - looking closely at the rings on the reverse, they're all wrong, too.
It's fake. Unless you know this coin (and all rarities for that matter) and have studied it well, I wouldn't buy one unless it is slabbed by a TPG.
Arnold, that is a very obvious fake. You may want to look at Heritage Auctions archives, or PCGS Coinfacts, to see what authentic Fugios look like. If you plan on buying one, purchase one certified by a reputable grading service. They are great coins a distillate of American values. Happy collecting!
My grandfather left a coin to my dad and over the years I've been drawn to it however after reading the rarity of the coin I was wondering if someone who is a advide collector would be able to give me some feedback about the coin that has been a favorite of mine since I was 14.
I'd like to see some pictures of the coin myself so I can get a little more perspective as to what to look for
