Ok this thread can be rather confusing, even to the seasoned cointalk veterans.

    Let us establish some facts.

    1. There appears to be multiple multiple FS-901 DDR 1899 Barber Quarters out there. Brian Raines states "I have owned several, including an au."

    2. When this thread was started there was only 1 FS-901 DDR 1899 Barber Quarter graded by PCGS.

    3. The coin in question appears to match the only coin graded by PCGS.

Feel free to add any more facts to the list .. :)

My main question is can anyone confirm the slab is real?

They are discussing this coin on CU. You and I have the same question. Apparently, this coin and slab are imaged by PCGS which means they graded a coin and slab as genuine. I have not confirmed this. Additionally, what's to stop a faker from making a copy of a slab/coin combo. I'd need to see this exact coin on the PCGS site.

@Insider Here is the link to the coin on the PCGS site . . . https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1899-25c-ddr-fs-901/511562

Furthermore, the following is a link to the Cert Verification . . . https://www.pcgs.com/cert/32495319

This is very intriguing!!! The lettering and stars are totally off. Excited to see where this thread goes...

PCGS has acknowledged the discussion, and is investigating.

I am expecting a full expose article in Coin World when the results come in.

The True View image matches the coin in question so it is in a legitimate slab.

I emailed them to see if they will consider submitting it to CAC. It will be interesting to see what they say.

Looks like good news . . . L&C now indicates the coin is OUT OF STOCK.

Hopefully, PCGS has approached them with a reasonable offer to remove it from the market.

Since the Cert number is still active, it's a better bet that PCGS just had L&C Coins send it to them for review and study first. IMO, they'd need to crack it and study it in-hand before making a final decision.

Well it is Numismatic news. And if it comes back fake,
there is an obligation to transparency and the integrity of the hobby.
Plus, it's a very interesting story.

I expect that the Barber Society folks will be at next weekend's Raleigh show. If I get a chance, I'll stop by and catch up with them about this.

Just when I'd gotten the hang of avoiding fake Barbers on eBay, now I want to go looking for one (in particular)...

Just a note, PCGS has closed the discussion on Collectors Universe. closed.jpg
My friends at the Barber Coin Collectors' Society are considering a follow-up in their journal- will be interesting where this one goes.

Anyone who looks at this photo and doesn’t agree its a total fake is literally blind. The lettering of a real Barber quarter compared to the OP coin isn’t even close. Just look at the T’s and that’s all you need to see. Not to mention any of the letters. There’s no way that could happen from a worn die.

    Great post @Jack D. Young
