Great coins! I'm building a collection of Northumbrian sceats and stycas that you can see: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=5403 I have a few of Leofthegn's creative designs, including the "Alpha" design:
Added a few more: King Aethelred I, moneyer Tidwulf King Eanred, Moneyer Wihtred Rare "double reverse" of the moneyer Herreth
Another new rare sceat/styca, a coin of Aethelred I by moneyer Cuthgils (S. 857): O: ED+LRED R: CVD CLS with triangle with cross above (shrine?) This is about as creative as the coins get. It has on the reverse what has been called a shrine or a church steeple. Probably copied from a Merovingian or early Carolingian contemporary coin. This is a fairly rare issue with only a handful known.
Interesting medieval coins---I used to have quite a few before circumstances forced me to sell nearly my entire collection (Ancients ,Medieval, Moderns) several years ago---only one of two albums of Ancients remained until I started again this past November or so... Undoubtedly, I'll be adding a few in the months to come.....
Do you think there is enough interest in medieval coins for their own forum? It seems to me they don't fit with the ancient coins, and the world coin section is mostly modern milled, so they feel out of place there too...
As a new collector of medieval coins I've asked myself many times where to post. With its own section I see a lot more conversation which would be great as I work on my collection. Could even become nearly as active as the Ancients section...well then again that could be a stretch with how much posting goes on over there
I was just reading some of the feedback posts concerning the creation of the Ancients forum, and they seem to indicate the idea was for medieval coins to go there (makes sense, keeping Roman and Byzantines together), and then world coins being 1600 to present. The Ancient forum now doesn't represent this, and hence we get the hammered coins here in the world forum...
