Had some ebay bucks to burn off and picked up this little french morsel. A common coin but decent for the type and was free thanks to the bucks. France (Feudal): Vienne, Archbishopric, 11th and 12th Centuries Billon Denier O: + S • M • VIENNA • (= Saint Maurice of Vienne), bearded head of St. Maurice left. R: MAXIMA GALL (= Greater Gaul), cross with pellets. Vienne mint, (1200-1250 A.D.) 18mm .80g Roberts 5045, Poey d'Avant 4828 Plate CVI/17, Boudeau 1046.
I don't have but a couple of medieval coins, but this one is my favorite: FRANCE, FEUDAL, Valence, Bishops of Valence and Die, Denier OBVERSE: Stylized angel facing, +VRBS VALENTIAI REVERSE: Cross annulet in fourth quadrant, +S APOLLI NARS Struck at Valence, FR, 1157-1276 1.18g, 19mm Boudeau 1021
Nice catch (and for free !!!) Vienna (and Valence too) are really nearby my place : Vienna is 50 miles away and Valence less than a 100. I like to see those types from time to time, even though they're not from Dombes Q
