I'm sure an entity such as the US mint has insurance for covering losses such as this. Aside from that, say he returns it, and the mint issues a refund mistakenly. Now what? Not worth opening that can of worms.

Sometimes a mistake is just a mistake. Returning the extra set may become more trouble than it's worth.

Call them, they'll tell you if they want it back and provide return instructions if so. Otherwise you could offer to pay for it. Just cuz someone made an error, doesn't make it right to just look the other way and keep the extra as a bonus.

Just my opinion. Honesty always feels better to me.

My views on fraud are quite simple: Don't do it.

But this isn't fraud, is it? If I received something I didn't pay for from a local merchant, I'd return it the next time I was in the store. If the Mint was willing to send me a postage paid box to return it in, or at least a shipping label I could print, then I'd probably return it. But, I'm not going to spend my money to return something that was a mistake on their part to send.

I would agree to returning the item to the mint, provided they send a SASE to you were you to call them. My last purchase from the mint was in 2008, I bought an APE that was damaged and had to return it - it took about three months to get the charge back on my credit card. Their quality control is awful these days. Packaging is flimsy plastic, they are slow etc.

Ladies and gentlemen, a kind reminder that we might have some people on our own forum that are on food stamps - albeit buying coins and posting about it - be sensitive please.

I wonder if you can get a TPG to certify it as a Mint error...

I would call the Mint's CS number and let them know that you received a set you didn't order, and was not charged for and let them decide what should be done.

At least that way the Mint was notified of their error.

I don't have any problem with what's been posted about food stamps so far. When d.t.menace first brought them up, it was about obtaining them fraudulently. If someone is doing that, or redeeming them in a fraudulent manner, they should be ashamed!

Personally from what I have read in the past about getting free things or such. Sometimes its best to keep quiet, you're either going to start an argument about moral ethics or people will get jealous and start crying about unfairness.

Morals schmorals. Keep the darn thing. I'm sick hearing about 'doing the right thing'. Dealing with shady coin dealers most of my life is enough for me to take a good thing when it's given to you. You're not dealing with an individual who will be hurt by accidentally sending you an extra set. If you found a quarter in the return slot of a Pepsi machine, would you send it back to Pepsi? Would you put it in the newspaper lost and found section? What if you ordered a regular sized fries from McDonalds and discovered they gave you a super sized fries instead?

I finally got to inspect these sets. One of the Eagles looks like a rake was run across the obverse two or three times. Could it be that they were just trying to get rid of it? Give it away to pad the final numbers?

They defecate coins - seriously there is a lot of junk and lousy packaging coming out of the mint these days. I have decided if I have to have a mint product I will pay more and buy it aftermarket and be able to inspect it beforehand so I don't end up with some chicken poxed abomination.
