you have a trivia but the tougher questions are worth more than we have to post a 1 coin auction that is going for $1000 and then we have to post their favorite (doesn't have to be yours) then you have to come up with describing words of their favorite coin
    easy 1point
    med 5 pt
    hard 10 pt
    auctoin 20pt
    picture 10pt
    describing words 2 pts each

  12. bqcoins

bqcoins Olympic Figure Skating Scoring System Expert

A contest for a short story of which the main subject is coins, no longer than 10,000 words. It'd be a challenge, fun, and people would get immense enjoyment from reading some of them.

I like the idea of doing a Guess the Grade contest, but it should be a large grade guessing competition covering a variety of US coins. This would give people a chance to practice grading many types of coins. There could be a point system for accuracy, with the best grader winning the gold.

    Just my two cents....

  15. Treashunt

    Treashunt The Other Frank

Correct answer; It never did, unless you mean 1909, when the Indian turned into a Lincoln cent or 1959 when the reverse was changed to the Memorial reverse.

  16. Treashunt

    Treashunt The Other Frank

    The best contest:
I should try to guess my birthday(or age), without checking my driver's liscense or counting on my fingers, or using a calculator.
    (The math would be difficult.)

    Really different Idea

Here's an unusual idea. This would encourage users to really read the threads on CoinTalk.

DAK takes the picture of a coin or some other numismatic item. He (I assume it is he) then uses a graphics program to cut it into 8 or 10 or 16 equal squares. Actually, this could be a set of quotations that apply to coin collecting (A penny earned, is a penny saved, etc....)

Now, every other day or so for the next 2-3 weeks, DAK sends one of these squares or quotations to someone who is a regular on CoinTalk. It is this person's job to attach that one piece of the puzzle to one of their posts - the puzzle piece obviously would have nothing to do with the subject of the poster's message - it would just be a regular message responding to something in a thread - but it would contain the attachment wth the puzzle piece.

As I said, every other day or so, DAK would send a new piece to someone else to attach to a message. At the end, the first person to submit all the pieces of the puzzle wins the prize.

This would favor absolutely no one and it would "force" people to at least look at threads which supposedly don't interest them.

The disadvantage is that if it's a graphic thing, it might require some computer skills to manipulate. However, as I said, it could be a set of random quotations that could only be determined by having read them in the CoinTalk forums.

And to add a twist, Dak could maybe get a couple of members to hide clues on their personal coin-collecting websites and then make references to them in a message. Exploring we will go!!! :)

  18. USS656

    USS656 Here to Learn Supporter

I really like the idea - it's sort of like a scavenger hunt. The only negative is it favors people that have a lot of time. As Twiggs mentioned, some people are slaves to their jobs and have little ones at home that also impacts their ability to participate in something like this. If you do something like this I think you should at least post the day the piece will appear.

Not to mention that the number of people searching and the amount of searching done by each person would just bombard the server.

Ok... One last stab at a fun contest.

Everyone writes an article or ad for a supposed coin "magazine". Pretty free form, you may do almost anything that you want. Here's the hook tho... you can't tell anyone what article or ad you wrote. All articles must be accurate to the best of the author's knowledge, buit try to say outrageous things within might be to your advantage. Dak will write an article or ad but he will also write a "dummy or fake"article or ad. The 1st person to identify the fake article or ad wins! In a version of the old gameshow "To Tell The Truth", we could also give prizes for the articles or ads that get the most incorrect votes as the fake.

This way a few things are insured.

    1) everyone participates

    2) a wide variety of knowledge will be shared

    3) it gives creative outlets a chance to do their own thing

    4) we could include columns on ebay tag lines, links to auctions, etc. the ideas are limitless!

    5) this contest is repeatable!!

Sorry it took so long, but it came to me in the middle of the night after much thought on this "contest" contest. I wanted the idea to be something more than just a race ro random winner.

Nice idea, but it would strongly favor very expierienced collectors who have been grading for years.
