Very good point... I like it... I'm glad to see folks wanting to see everybody included. This will definatly be a priority in the design of the contest!

Let's see...how about this as the contest: Whoever guesses the correct number of war/silver nickels that you've found since you last updated your signature line.

Or it could be guessing the number of buffalo or pre 1960 nickels you've found.
    Any of the above.

The first pewrson to finish would only be for the 13th question. If we get that far. The first 12 would have a reasonable time limit to accomplish. Yes and the contest would take newbies into account as well. It should be a contest that focuses on the passion of coin collecting as the knowledge can be very diverse :)

BTW DAK how am I doing with my ideas? A contender for the silver? :D

  11. How about a secret picture not necessarly a coin- somewhere on the forum and the first person to find it wins the gold?
Of course we would need a hint on what we are looking for.

That was the first thing that came to mind. A treasure map - and the trail is marked with clues you have to follow that will lead you to the next clue. Similar to the movie "National Treasure". All the clues should be related to coins in some way. The clues must work in a way that if you have not figured out the previous clues you cannot move on. This is the first I have read this so I would have to give it some thought as to how exactly that could work.

    Good Luck

dak, this is an awsome idea for a contest ... like spock1k mentioned - Alot of folks cannot afford gold coins and might never have one. This is an awsome chance for some of them (us lol) to get one.

    Here is my "legitimate" idea.
Take a picture of the coin and distort it greatly with PhotoShop.
Do the distortion in 7 stages, revealing the one with the most distortion first and following daily (or bi-daily) with a less and less distorted picture until someone guesses what the coin is.
I have PhotoShop and would be willing to do the distortion for you.
This, of course, would eliminate my eligibility for the contest , but I would enjoy helping.
    :)

Wow, you guys aren't making this easy for me!!! These Ideas are great! I kinda want to take bits a pieces from a few ideas, I guess I'll have to come up with some consolation prizes for these ideas.

I see lots of consolation prizes in your signature. ;)

BTW - I like the idea of a "treasure hunt". Multiple stages, finish one thing, off to another, etc. If you don't mind parting with some of those nickels in your signature, I could see a lot of people being happy with coming in second or third or whatever. I know I would.

Ok... The construction of the contest is underway... I have purchased a website for us to play with! The contest will still be held on CoinTalk, and answers and commincation will still be here, I'll just be using the website as extra information, hints, clues and whatnot. I will be designing it over the next few days and see if I can get it off the ground...

WHEN the contest is officially ABOUT to start (its not starting yet), I will post up here on this thread " CONTEST BEGINS IN 24 HOURS " to give everyone fair notice of the start so one person can't just get lucky and take off when everyone else doesn't even know it has started...

Alright, here is my refined idea (at least until my next post in this thread, lol):

    A multi-part "treasure hunt":

Make each part focus on a different area of coins and collecting.

    1) RPM Lincolns (happy now Phoenix?) ;)
    2) coin grading challenge
    3) World coin identification
    4) etc.

Come up with the ideas on your own, or solicit ideas from anyone who will NOT partake in the challenge (if there is anyone left). That way, everyone will have areas of strength and weakness (some of us more than others). Include a couple of more "luck" based challenges. (How many coins in the pile pictured, etc.) That way, those of us with less knowledge than others still have a chance. I'd also like to see that each challenge could be completed by someone who doesn't necessarily know much about that particular topic. (i.e. - me and RPM's)

Better yet - let everyone take a pass on one or more questions(or tasks), to help even the playing field even further.

I strongly suggest that you start a new thread for the official contest, as many people do not check every new posting to an established thread; especially one with a large number of prior responses.

This one is almost ready to go to multiple pages. ;)

Will do, thanks for the suggestion Roy.

How about a good old fashioned "Pick a number between 1 and 100" contest. Maybe?
