The very first one I purchased was a set of the 3 1943 Steel Cents. Unc of course. I paid like 10c for them. My brother and I took them out of the packet to look at and they still have my brother's fingerprint.

I started coin collecting in 1948 (12 years old) ... I sent for a B. Max Mehl greenish catalog advertised in a Comic Book. Along with the book order I sent a question or two to them I wanted an answer to. Along with an answer I got an offer to buy a 1909SVDB cent in XF condition for $3.50 ... I worked hard hoeing beans (1/2 mile rows) for 2 cents a row with my step-dad and saved my money all summer. I finally had enough and sent Mr. Mehl the $3.50 in cash in an envelope ... and sure enough, about 2 weeks later, I owned my first purchased coin ... a 1909SVDB cent ... my step-dad said I was totally insane. I still own that coin and wouldn't sell it for anything.

I know the contest is done but thought I would add my first coin anyway. I bought my first coin when I was 10 yrs old. I convinced my father to take me to the local coin shop, and I purchased a 1920-S Buffalo Nickel in G condition for $1.25 (a lot of money for a 10 yr old in 1973). I still have that coin in my collection.
