The first coin I bought was an 1847 Half Dime at my first coin club auction. I got it for $17.00! One of my best buys ever.
The first coin I actually purchased for my collection was the 82 cc gsa that is my avatar. The beginnings of my collection were all given to me or pulled from circulation.
My first purchase was at a flea market last year. My purchase was 1909 VBD for $15 from Littleton Coin. Thanks for this contest.
I remember telling Grandpa I was tired of Lincolns and wanted to try dimes. (I think I saw a part of him die on that day. lol) I took my allowance and bought a bunch of modern dimes from some ad in Coinworld. Dates ranged from 1970-1985. Still have them today, even though they aren't in the portfolio.
Ohh, I just thought it was supposed to end today.... I should have read closer. My bad..... I'm just really excited, how great would it be to win?
my first coin purchase was actually a set of 3 Morgans 1890 o 1891 o and 1896 o in a velvet material case. I paid way more for it then it is worth( I paid $150 for it). But I still enjoy looking at it as much today as I did the first time I saw it so I am happy.
My first coin purchased was an Unc 1944 UK florin ... I remember writing the letter longhand, putting in a money order and eagerly awaiting its arrival (back in 1980). This came after I'd discovered a jar of UK coins in my dad's closet that was being renovated.

Old dog - New membership ? Hi Matt, Although I am way past 70, my story follows as I would like a chance at the ANA memebership. When I was young and reckless I worked at an aircraft factory back in the late fifties. One day a co-worker came in with a box of old type coins she inhireted from her father from Iowa. The total face value was about $ 70.00. At the time I was doing a lot of overtime hours and decided to bid on the coins. I paid $ 180.00 for the coins and started building my collection from that day on. Never regreted that first buy or any since.
Young at heart Thanks Ken. I suppose the reason I sound young is due to my inability to communicate well on my post. Although I am an avid collector, I haven't studied the facts and history of coins. I know it's not proper, but it is easier for me to just ask questions from the experts.
Not true. Your communications skills are very well honed. In many respects we are all young, that is to say, we don't let the technology get the better of us. I believe that rising to a challange and continuing to educate ourselves keeps us sharp and stimulates the little grey cells.
