My first was a 1954 Franklin Half. Don't even know why I bought it. Was waiting for a Greyhound bus at the bus station and noticed a coin shop nearby. Went in to kill a little time, looked around at what they had and made the purchase. At that point something snapped. Been collecting ever since with a passion. Have learned alot over the years and still learning everyday. Love this hobby!
The first coin I purchased was from a vendor outside of the Denver mint. We went to Denver on a family vacation and a guy was selling 1943 steel pennies. I decided to buy one with each mint mark. Techincally I bought all 3 in one purchase so that may disqualify me from this contest. After the tour of the mint I bought a 1994 proof set in the gift shop. I was hooked and its been downhill ever since
1897 Barber dime in F or thereabouts. Paid $1.95. Bought it at a coin store we used to have near my house. Place went out of business a few years later, or the guy retired, not sure... at any rate, my interest in coins died shortly afterwards without a consistent and reputable dealer to work with.
I'm trying to think back 44 years here-- was it a silver dateless 3-cent piece with a hole in it that I bought for 50 cents at a coin club meeting, or was it the two heavily worn V-nickels (1900 and 1909) that I bought at the coin shop next to the movie theater for 15 cents each?
I was in my local coin shop, picking up the 2011 Red Book last summer, when I saw this little fellow in the case, and I had to have him. I think he was 12 bucks or so. http://img546.imageshack.us/g/p5130126.jpg/
The first coin I ever bought was technically five coins: a 1957 proof set! I didn't know about toning back then, so I was sure that I had gotten ripped off because the dime wasn't totally silver. Thanks!
I should remember, it was only a couple years ago. It was a roll of wheat cents or a canada silver dollar.
The first coin I bought to start my coin collection was an AU (raw) 1949-S Franklin Half Dollar. I knew this coin was the "key date" (even though the Franklin Half series has no major rarities [not including variety coins]). I still have this coin to this very day and it holds a special place in my heart. That is the coin that started my, dare I say, ADDICTION... :hatch: Hahaha! HOPE 2 WIN! Always wanted to join ANA but just never could afford it. -Brian
First coin I _EVER_ bought was a SBA dollar for two quarters. My friend got the SBA as change from the guy, and the video game machine wouldn't accept it, so he offered to sell it to me for two quarters. I offered a dollar bill, but he didn't want to wait on the "continue."
I bought a bunch of mercury dimes all at once but that was a bit ho-hum as far as passion goes. I really think I need to list the one that jumped out and sucked me totally into being a coin collector again and that was my 1878-cc Morgan Silver Dollar. That one took my breath away and still does. TY for the contest Matt!! :thumb:
I Don't know whether this qualifies or not but my first coin purchase was from HSN for State Quarters in the year 2004. Seems kind of embarassing to me for saying I purchased from HSN but it got me where I am now.
My mother used to go to a flea market in Manhattan back 7 years ago when I was 10 years old. On one of those visits I managed to stray from my mother while she was looking at a vendors items. Anyways I made it to another vendor who happened to be a coin dealer. He had 5 large binders full of coins and a bowl full of bargain coins for 1 dollar each. Being attracted to the brightness and shinyness of the bargain bin I pulled my hand in there and grabbed the first coin I could. It happened to be a Moracco 10 Francs 1371 coin. Now Moracco dates its coins differently so that 1371 coin is actually minted in 1951. Having no idea of that fact at the time I stand in place shocked at how old this coin is and rush to go to my mom to tell her to purchase this for me. My mom never one to dissapoint me buys me the coin and from their my passion of coin collecting began which would in years time would lead me to purchasing a few real ancient coins myself.
