Franklin error on the chin - what causes this?

    Sorry but it's just damage. The coin has had a hard life.

    I'm leaning toward damage, but just to be sure, I'd like to see a close-up of the area in question.

    A close-up of that spot could be telling. Since the rest of the coin shows no dirt or toning and that spot is rust colored, it could be a strike through of a ferrous metal of some sort. Close-up pictures could tell that.

    Is it possible that ole Ben cut himself shaving? From the only photo posted it looks like PMD.

    That Franklin has had a rough life. Best case scenario, it's cleaned, ugly, and worth around melt. :( As to the error, if you're referring to his chin, it's either a really big ding or a strike through of some sort.
