I've started a collection of 1st year releases, and I suspect I'm just seeing the tip of the iceberg. In any event, I'll post mine here as I get them, everyone is free to post as well, within the topic. Ceres 5c 1871 Ceres 5f 1870 Lindauer 25c Maillechort 1938 Dupuis 2c 1898 Dupuis 10c 1898
Nice. I really like French coins. Even the base metal coins are beautiful, especially unc. It looks like your collection is in slabs. Do you select ngc slabs, pcgs, or what? And do you consider details graded ones, or only clean grades? Just curious, I'm always considering ways to collect world coins, since I have tons
Hi Joe, thanks for the comment. I've been picking up all these in PCGS slabs, though I do have a few cheaper coins that are raw. Once I get a batch of raw coins I'll send them in to PCGS for slabbing. For me, quality is a way bigger deal than quantity, so I would not buy a details coin and I'm trying to get coins that are within a grade or two of the top PCGS MS grade. I realize this could quickly limit my collection as it drains my bank account, but realistically I'm hoping for a collection that contains under a hundred nice coins that could easily be enjoyed by others (i.e. not the "come see my european vacation slides...").
Very nice presentation Dave! Looks like you figured out your shooting set up and are getting great results now, too! Have you thought about expanding into French medals, too?
Sounds like a good plan. If I had the extra funds, I'd do the same and get a lot of my nicer world coins graded. One day I should be able to. It would be interesting your finished collection
Hey Dave, very nice collection... making me droll a little. Can ya' post the grades of the coins you're posting?
Thanks Chris for the photography feedback. They're not perfect, but at least presentable at this point. And yes I do have a few medals, but for the moment that's a project for another day... Thanks Aidan! I'll post the grades going forward.
A few more today: 50c Morlon, 1941, SPL63 50c Bazor, 1942, SPL64 10f Turin small head, 1947, MS64 50c Napoleon Lauree, 1864, MS64
Dave, I'm enjoying this thread and your images of the pieces you've selected and acquired. That Napolean III, 1864 50 Centimes looks to have a fair bit of color, that I'm sure is much more vibrant in-hand. I hope you keep trying to coax it out. Have you tried the axial lighting set-up yet?
Hi @Dave M , I hope you don't mind me posting this here also. Fits in nicely. You have a fantastic collection! I look forward to your newps! Regards, Brandon
Fits perfectly Brandon, thanks for posting it in this thread! Though every time I see that coin I kind of wish I'd bought it Dave
How frickin' awesome is this?! A very deep kowtow to you, sir! Congratulations, and thanks for sharing!
Three more arrivals today: 5c Napoleon Tete Nue, 1853A, MS65RB 2c Napoleon Tete Lauree, 1861A, MS65RB 1f Francisque, 1942, MS64
20F Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, 1852 MS65 The coin was only issued for one year with this designation, while he was president of the Second French Republic (1848-52). After his coup d'etat creating the French Second Empire, he called himself Napoleon III, and the series was then titled as such.
