Boy ! I don't even where to start with French designs I like. But if I did start, I think I'd start with this one from 1364. I'm certain all the members that have been here for a while have seen it numerous times, but the newer members haven't. Hmmm, sounds like a valid excuse to post it again to me

The first French franc, the Franc a' Cheval - a coin with several books worth of history behind it, including it's very reason for being designed and minted - to pay the ransom for a King captured in battle by his nemesis, The Black Prince. And how that King voluntarily gave up his life and died in prison, purely to save his honor.

This example was minted by the Count Louis de Male in FLanders, 1364. When I purchased it, it was the finest known, it may still be, or not. But that doesn't really matter, nor did it when I bought it. I bought the coin because I absolutely loved the design ! I mean it's kinda hard to get any better than a King in armor on a horse, sword raised, charging into battle ! Things like that have stirred my blood since I was a young boy - they still do

Could I post more ? I could fill this thread, and maybe I'll add some more in a bit. But for now, I'll let others share theirs first.
