Most mints simply didn&#039;t keep records of such things as there was no reason to do so because it was normal for this to happen. </p><p><br /></p><p>And of course there are counterfeits, contemporary or otherwise, that are washed and or plated in the normal metal. But those are often detectable, especially if they have a bit of wear, and sometimes design discrepancies.&nbsp; Whereas the off metal strikes are typically spot on design wise, but obviously not of the correct metal.[/QUOTE]</p><p><br /></p>
