I sat down with my 5-1/2 year old niece this weekend to have her look more closely at the nickels. She asked what the bison was. When I asked her which coin was her favorite, she said without even a second of hesitation the keelboat.

i thought the mint will produce more nickels. in fact it is not much. 300 to 400 million pieces. that's o.k. remember some 50 state quarters is much higher in mintage. so it is safe.

I love all the new reverses, the detail is terrific, but the obverse is booooorrrriiinnnggg. Can someone from the mint explain why 99.999 % look like they use a chain saw to package them? Knicks - Gouges - Scratches - Discoloration / Stains, gas streaks, dents, I only keep about 1 in every 300 searched.

You don't need someone form the mint to explain it - just think about the manufacturing process. Coins go through the presses at a rate of speed that exceeds that of many machine guns. The coins are spit out into a large hopper that holds literally tons of coins - with each and every one being hit by thousands of other coins traveling at a high rate of speed.

That's why you can only find one in hundreds, or even thousands, that is not covered with nicks, dents, dings & scratches.

those nickel coins coming from the mint for rolls and bags. is that consider ms 63 or ms 60?. even with dent, scratch and so forth. that might be ms 63. right?. the proof sets and proof coins bought directly from the mint might start at proof 67 and above. and the mint set might be ms 65 and above.

There are no hard and fast rules - you might find an MS67 coin in a bag, but the odds of doing so are certainly against it. But yes, even with all the nicks & dings, the coins are still MS albeit low MS.

And Proofs - no they are not all 67 and above. Many of them will be PF65 - some of them will even be lower. And contrary to what many think - only a few out of a thousand will be PF69 or higher.

I would say that that my favorite modern new nickle is the "Ocean in View"
I am sure the Buffalo was an awsome site to behold.. but the Journey's end to the Ocean! Thats the $$$ coin for sure...

    westward nickels

should we buy 2005 westward journey 6 pc nickel set?. are this set potential enough to increase in the future?. i am not quite sure. 2004 might be the winner. 2005 mintage should be double or triple the 2004 set.

I'd have to say I'm a fan of the buffalo back nickel. Followed by the ocean view.

    2006 new nickel

the six nickels should be a good collection. 2003 (last old jeff), 2004(peace medal & keelboat), 2005(american bison & ocean in view) and 2006(new first year jeff). these nickels will command a premium price. check 2003 already up in its price.

    westward journey nickels mintage

    mintage for westward journey nickels

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ocean in view nickel came out just recently. i see o.v. production increase repidly. here are the data as of today.

    peace medal (P) 361,440,000 (D) 372,000,000
    keelboat (P) 366,720,000 (D) 344,880,000
    am. bison (P) 448,320,000 (D) 487,680,000
    ocean in view (P) 254,400,000 (D) 290,400,000

i estimate ocean in view might pass peace medal and keelboat in production or at almost the same mintage with 2004 nickels.

how the u.s. mint sold those nickels?

    total production:
peace medal 733,440,000 sold by mint i don't have figure
keelboat 711,570,000 sold by mint 24,932,400 or 3.2%
    am.bison 936,000,000 sold by mint 95,399,480 or 10.2%
ocean in view 544,800,000 sold by mint 28,520,520 or 5.2%

note: ocean in view still in production stage. mintage will be much higher after end of the year. another thing is that the banks and the dealers or investors, collectors and general public also hoard a lot of these nickels. so it could drops the price to its bottom. a nickel is a nickel. i concluded that i should not even buy the 2005 westward journey nickel 6 pc set. 2004 set is the winner.
