the prices of spouses gold should be selling at $604.00 (proof) and $591.00 (unc) starting tomorrow. it went as high as $654.00 (proof) and $641.00 (unc). and as low as $$549.95 (proof) and $524.95 (unc). that is before the new price system. during 2007. the mint selling the proof at $429.95 and the unc at $410.95.

the prices is lowered by the mint. i plan to buy the two liberty coins. van buren and jackson spouses gold coins. i have not decided which one is better. proof or unc?. it is hard to choose. also should i buy UHR double eagle or spouse gold?.

    One UHR for $1239.00.

to green18: two spouses gold unc at $1,182.00
two spouses gold proof at $1,208.00
    1. you can buy those first three spouses (washington spouse etc) at near bullion.
    2. it looks like even the mintage is low on the last two spouses (van buren and jackson spouse). and still few people like it.

    UHR double eagle at $1,239.00
    1. mintage is high.
    2. i don't like its thickness and smaller diameter than one ounce eagle.

imagine the sold out am eagle 2008w 1/4 ounce unc gold at $297.00. if the mint is still selling them. i can buy four 1/4 oz eagle for $1,188.00. and it is the lowest mintage of all eagles and buffaloes gold coins. luckily i did bought 22 pieces and cancel some 26 pieces due to uncertainty of the price fluctuation and its mintage. i thought the mintage will pass 10,000 and above or even higher than the other denominations.

now i have some money left. to buy van buren and jackson spouse or uhr double eagle or to buy the clad proof set, silver proof set and the five pieces lincoln cent and dollar set.

well. it is hard to decide. i need advise from an expert.

The prices I quoted were from the mint web site and I am well aware of the initial first spouse prices in the aftermarket. The point I was illustrating was that if one bought the current first spouse offerings from the mint they would be doing better (price wise) than purchasing one UHR. Not only that but you would probably have the spouse coins in hand well before the UHR.
As for the crystal ball analysis I can only state that I am not a speculator or investor but am a pure collector, however, if I had to make a bet on what's going to go up in the aftermarket I'd say the Lincoln Dollar/Cent set.

but the lincoln dollar cent set might be limited to one per family. may be i should go with a lot of clad and silver proof sets plus one 5 pc set. and forget about the gold for the meantime.

When the Lincoln Commem was first offered there was a "strict ordering limit of 100 units per household". I thought this limit was excessive as it gives dealers and speculators an unfair advantage and now the option to buy from the mint is gone. When the Lincoln Dollar/Cent set comes up I'm sure the buying option will be somewhat limited but I don't see it being limited, to say, one unit per household. How many o' these dang things you want to order Elaine? :)

well. actually for the five pc set. one is enough for me. but i will buy more of the clad and silver proof set. and the spouse gold will depend on its mintage. if one the the issue remain at least than 2,000. as for uhr double eagle. maybe one pc is good for me too.

Harrison FS coin looks to be the key to the series to date. Unless gold take a nose dive and the mint drops their prices any more, I don't think that the mintage of Harrison FS coins will go up much more. In fact, I expect all the FS coins this year to have very similar mintages as each other. If you notice, all the mintages for the FS series tend to level out after one month in production as long as there is no major fluctuation in the gold market. Just my personal opinion, but I think that we will see a lull in mintage numbers until we get to the more modern first spouses that we can all relate to. My guess would be that Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy and Nancy Reagan may be the most popular.

yes. i think harrison too. but who knows. it might continue to go down. for the meantime. it is better to stick to three liberty designs. and one in the future. that's it. no collection for the whole series.

You may want to hurry on the Adams and Jackson coin they will stop selling them soon like they did with Madison and (Monroe only 12,000 total) when pulled

Elaine, you hit on a very interesting issue...... do you:

    A. Buy all the low mintage FS coins and don't worry about trying to make a complete set and bet on a high return for those coins.
    OR
    B. Try putting together a complete proof and unc set

If you are going to be buying 2 and 3 of the same FS coins, seems like you would try to put together a complete set as well. I understand that certain coins in the series may carry a premium over other because of their lower mintages, but I would also think 10 years from now when the series is over, whoever has put together a complete set will have a valuable collection....and not just the gold value. Its like the 1995-1996 Olympic comms. Some coins carry a premium over others in the set, but having a complete set is not only hard to find, but financially rewarding. Try finding a complete 16 coin unc set in the box for less than 3k or the complete 32 coin set for less than 5k. Years ago, I bought the 16 coin proof set for $1200. Now you don't see them less than $1600. Maybe occasionally you will find a deal, but not often.
