As far as I know a no reeded edge is impossible because the reeds are made when the coin is struck. So in order to have no reeds it would need to be an unstruck planchet. This coin is either a dryer coin or was spooned.
Looks spooned. They use different methods today and not real spoons. I've seen some really nice spooned rings once.
Fun? Fun? My friends and I used to "clank" mailboxes and knock on doors and run! That's fun, especially after a night of drinking and smoking pot. Ahh, The 80's were an interesting time. We live in a housing project, so it was easy to hide. Anyways, I feel it was spooned/ then polished out. That's my story and I'm sticking with it!
If the collar wasn't in the press the coin would get smooshed and look much different (and be wider as the collar wouldn't be there to shape it to size). When a coin is struck without a collar that is called a Broadstruck error. The edges certainly would not be tall like they are with that coin. Mint Error Coin Chronicles: Broadstrikes | NGC (ngccoin.com) The quarter is of course indicative of a dryer coin or spooned. Of course that could have been a while ago and it could have been used and washed/cleaned by someone else.. Who knows right? This thread shows many examples of dryer and spooned coinage ==> https://www.cointalk.com/threads/dryer-coin-vs-spooned-coin.304963/
