Looks like it could be a Spanish 1/2 reale although I don't know enough about them to comment on authenticity. Try posting this on the World Coins board since it is a relatively modern coin (~1600s).
If that's a half real, that was one sweet roll, man. Unheard of. Metal detectorists go nuts when they find these 200+ year old coins!
Other than a sweet find I can't answer your question. Something that should not have been in a dime roll. lol
I didnt know there were half reals.whats unreal is my mom gave me some coins she saved.lol about 50 lbs.oy!
Found my 1796 1 Reale Mexico mint back in 2017 in a roll of dimes. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1796-1-reale.323384/ Makes your heart jump a little. lol
Looks like your coin may have been worn and maybe shaved over the years so the value is silver melt. But you’ll never sell it,right?
to be honest im thinking of selling it all.ive learned an incredible amount of stuff from all of you but collecting money is not my love.eyes are going and vintage m/c is my ting.im more into returns as im planning on retirement and thinning the herd so to say.☺ thanx to all for their input and guidence
I'm sorry, what? Pray tell, where can I find a 17th century cob coin in good condition with a date for $15? At that price, I'd be willing, nay keen, to take it off that person's hands.
That's what the reals go for. 17th century is 1600's 18th century is 1700's. Plenty of late 18th century reals for $15 in good condition.
Yep, I know my centuries. This is a 17th century cob, is it not? If it is Mexico mint (which I believe it is judging from the mint mark), it is almost certainly 17th century, as the Mecico mint transitioned to milled coins in the 1730s. Edit - I should add, in my experience a coin like this (barring some fluke auction) would be worth $25 at a minimum, date or no date. Regardless, you should be able to date it by the shield design (at least within a 10 year window). If buying from a reputable dealer, this coin would be $40 to $50
Also, I have done a little research, and this is not a 1/2 real, as 1/2 reals do not have the shield design. It is more likely a 1 real, and should weigh around 3.3 to 3.4 grams.
If have to agree. I was doing some research last night around this coin and topic and was thinking it was either a 1 or 2 real cut down to cob shape, and that the shield design looked like a Philip (Felipe) IV (or maybe V).
