Another of this seller's recolored/doctored coins: http://cgi.ebay.com/1818-Coronet-Cent-FDC-UNC-GEM-With-Original-Mint-Red_W0QQitemZ230201021459QQihZ013QQcategoryZ11950QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem For those not familiar with these coins, this coin is almost certainly a member of the Randall Hoard. Virtually always found with spots and never in a color like this due to the storage condition of the hoard (underground in a barrel/keg), I've never seen an original example of this hoard that look like this -- and that, along with the unnatural color, means that this coin has in all likelihood been recolored. For those who would rather not take my word for it, take a look here for examples of the same date/variety and report back what you find: http://coins.ha.com/common/auction/pricesrealized.php?src=&ID=&optGlobalSearch=&globalSiteDropdown=coins&cboDenomination=Large+Cents%3A&cboSaleNo=&txtSearch=1818+n-10+ms&cmdSearch=Search+Auction+Archives&hdnSearch=True&txtLotNo=&stage=1 Here's another date/variety (1820 n-13) that is also from the hoard. Take a look at these coins and compare them to this seller's example: http://coins.ha.com/common/auction/pricesrealized.php?src=&ID=&optGlobalSearch=&globalSiteDropdown=coins&cboDenomination=Large+Cents%3A&cboSaleNo=&txtSearch=1820+n-13+ms&cmdSearch=Search+Auction+Archives&hdnSearch=True&txtLotNo=&stage=1 As virtually all of this seller's silver has been dipped, the recoloring shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but it does speak to the credibility of the seller. But draw your own conclusions...Mike p.s. I also find it interesting that this person, who supposedly knows nothing of coins, not only identified the coin as a Randall Hoard coin, but also knows what other Randall Hoard large cents look like, as well as knows enough to judge this coin as "original mint red" (which it is almost certainly not). Coincidence?
