The minute I picked this coin up, I knew it was a proof! Even though it's badly scratched, there was no mistaking the look of a proof coin. Wowzers I was excited!
I found this in my pocket change...but only because I put it there I wish I could pull these from circulation. I occasionaly carry an ancient coin around with me. Constantius I A.D. 298- 303 27mm 9.2g CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES; laureate head right. SALVIS AVGG ET CAESS FEL KART; Carthage standing facing, head left, holding fruits in both hands. In ex Γ RIC VI Carthage 30a/ 32a
I found a Claudius II Gothicus in the coinstar reject bin a few months ago! I've seen other people that have found LRBs in cent rolls as well. It could happen to you too Here is the CG2 that was in the bunch of coinstar rejects: Claudius II Gothicus Silvered AE Antoninianus Antioch mint Obverse: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right Reverse: DIANAE VICTR, Diana standing right, holding bow and reaching for arrow from quiver on her back, stag to right, H in ex.
@furryfrog02 There is no way in hell I'd believe anyone could find an ancient in a reject bin - but then a few months before the pandemic: From a Roman colony "Carmo" in Spain, ca. 200 BC. Curiously though, this had made the reject slot then got thrown out into the trash can next to the machine where I dug it out whilst the coin machine was tallying up my CRH rejects.
There ya go! I got that whole pile of rejects because they were jammed in the chute. When we changed the bag out, I noticed the jam and loosened it. The teller let me keep them all. I couldn't believe my eyes when the C2G popped up. At first I thought it was just a beat up Zincoln.
That is precisely why one should always check the trash bin by the coin machine at your local credit union.
Not sure why this post went to ancients in seconds. Come on folks, he was happy to share his find, that's all. Nice find @love old coins. Pays to check your change.
Every now and then a proof gets found in general circulation. There are a few reasons this happens. Stolen proof sets that some creep cracked out and spent. Collector dies and family members spend the coins. Sadly this happens often. Collector gets dementia and starts spending their collection. A dealer breaks up sets for stock and possibly tosses it in his change drawer and gives it out to a customer. Or a dealer broke up some sets for stock and damaged the coin by accident so he just spent it (collectors do this too).
I should buy a coinstar machine, make a box where only i can access the rejected coins, and put it in a packed, public place
That's really kind of sad when you point it out...just adds to the whole mystique of "where did this coin come from?"
Awesome! I've found about 3 proof quarters in circulation over the span of a few years now. It's great to find them, especially when they still have their "frost" and mirrored background shine, and they've not really received much circulation wear & tear. I save them too.
