Nice! A semi key! I just saw the 1908 and figured just another common date IHC but surprised to see the S! What do you mean by "found in a jar of coins in a box"
I had an old whitman with Indian cents my father pulled out of circulation when he was a kid (mid 1940's). A few years back I must have pulled them all out because the album fell apart. I never paid much attention to the dates as I figured they were all common. The coins ended up in a jar about 7 years ago and put in a box. I finally decided to see what I had today.
Did your old Whitman look like my old Whitman that I have had since the 40's? Covered in cellophane tape but I can't make myself let go of it. IHC's were very plentiful back them.
Possibly… Post the reverse and maybe we could tell based on other characteristics such as the weak points on the corners of the “N”s on the reverse. Would be cool if it is, even in that condition
1878. 1872 has a much smaller date logotype. I did once cherry a decently nice '72 from my LCS for dirt cheap because the last digit was weak and he thought it was an 8...
Fascinating. Did these Whitman folders permit you to see the reverses of the coins somehow? If (as it appears) the display was single-sided did a lot of coins end up patinated much more on their obverses than reverses?
These folders did not allow visibility of the reverse. I don't think there was a difference between the two sides after storage. But, it is a good question. These coins have been in this folder for 60 or 70 years. It might be a good study to look at. I have one example that I have a photo of. If there is any interest I could do all of them.
