The 1942/41 D is actually a 1942/1941 D. All four digits are doulbed if you look under high enough magnification. Additionally the lower portion of the four does stick out underneath and to the left of the top four. The one is mostly obscured by the two, but the bottom sticks out from under the front edge of the two and the point from the front curl of the two. The rest of the one is usually visible as a shadow to varying degrees. All 1942/41 D dimes were produced by one die which probably cracked somewhere near the end of its life cycle which explains the die crack on several examples from the tip of the cap, across the hair and onto the jaw, terminating just before the neck. You can find other examples on the heritage website, notably one of the two ms67s graded (i can't remember which one). Furthermore, on the reverse the D is repunched. There is a D to the tilted slightly left visible just outside the D on the left and inside at the top right. PCGS estimates there are approximately 200 in MS60 or better with only 60 of those grading 65 or higher. The highest currently known are two ms66+ FB from pcgs and two ms67 FB from NGC. PCGS reports 107 in all conditions MS FB and NGC reports 98 I believe.
Honestly, value here becomes highly variable in MS which is why I wanted the experts to grade it. I would call it an MS65 FB all day long, but that is just my opinion.
OH MY HOLY..... Well NGC finished with the coin and it is on its way back. The coin indeed graded out at MS-65 FB. I am literally in shock, wow, just wow.
Yeah, which is why I am in shock. I could literally pay off the wife's car, buy a car for my daughter, drop several grand into home projects and still have thousands and thousands left over to save, invest, etc.
That is extremely extremely cool, and 20 grand? That’s a nice lump sum. Why did you get it certified with NGC, not PCGS, and you also have to find the right buyer.
Shoot - if it was me it would be off to heritage for an auction where the last one went at 18k. That would make me happy. Congrats BQ.
I went with NGC because as an ANA member I have submission rights and don't have to pay to join like at PCGS. Additionally, I like their holders better. As soon as it gets back I will post some pics of it. As for a buyer, Heritage may be getting a call from me, I've already done a ton of research on all the ones that have sold through them in 63 and higher.
im examing 1942/1 D mercs just lik yours in MS65, and a NGC went for 20,700 and a PCGS went for 25,300.. just saying PCGS graded ones go for alot more......
then again this ugly merc went for 41,400 us dollars..... http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=352&lotNo=5840
