Harder to see but 1918s, much easier under a light than a magnifier

Ya know how many of these I chucked as a kid? Innumerable multitude. Would have been fun to see what could rise out of the bleakness. If only I knew then what I know now.

This is a close up of the coinfacts MS-67 and as close as I could get to the OPs coins. Not sure, but they look pretty close to my blind as a bat eyes. The mintmark on the first restored one looks rather small. IMG_2251.PNG IMG_2253.PNG IMG_2252.PNG

Agreed. I still spend dateless buffalo nickels just so someone will find it and get excited. My grandfather always did this and hoped that he would bring others into the hobby, so I just keep it going with the same hope. I must have passed off thousands of them by now.

The date gets smeared, notice more with more wear on the coin.

It's my favorite standing liberty, but does not beat the 1916 I dream of owning one some day.

I don't believe anyone has yet suggested it is, sir. In particular, Tommy's post had to do with the greater market for such coins, as in how they would generally be accepted or viewed. Just because you're not looking to sell or profit, there's always someone who is and is why addressing this aspect is a reasonable part of the discussion.

Ya I see what your saying, I could delete this posting, but even if someome tries to sell a stained date or treated it does not even match the quailty of a readable date or partial date. Even though i have seen SLQs selling on ebay thay had no visable date but said it can be seen through a loup, and ill tell you, it makes it harder to read a date on SLQs.

    Don't you dare. :)

We go around on silver date restoration here every year or two. So far, I've been firmly in the camp of "it just doesn't work, because if it did, there would be a ton of restored 1923-S examples on the market, just like all the restored Buffalo key dates." But, as I've added each time, I'd love to be proven wrong.

No, no... that's not what I meant. Jeff's post above, though, says it all. It's a good subject for discussion and I'm glad you brought it up.

Well i can sure you it works but might take several times. Im a farmer and it is busy season. But have a few days for this cold to pass us in Nebraska to share what I found but if you remove the stain, their is a 8good chance the date wont be readable. Also put the nic a date under a light, the date sometimes apears right away but let the nic a date on the coin for 4 to 24 hours and make sure you clean off the acid off before soaking in water or the water will turn yellow and stain the whole coin. Keep the water clean. I have had some show a date in a hour to a week later. Sometimes light erasing on the date area after being soaked in water helps too. If your slqs have ridges on the side you have a very good chance of recovering the dates. Please share your findings or any question.

Also like to note i cant take all the credit, saw in a post that was a few years old to let the nic a date dry on the coin, that it brought out a couple dates out, but once i found out letting it soak in water brought alot of dates out. Water worked way better than vinegar, which was a surprise. Also tried lemon juice, hydrogen chloride, bleach, hands down nic a date than water was the answer.

To kirk, so it was you putting dateless buffalos back in circulation when i was roll hunting war nickels lol, about 400 rolls later found 30 war nickels. I see wheaties yet. And found a franklin half when half dollar roll hunting. Trick is to go to small towns or local banks. Never found silver dimes or quarter. Wife found a couple silver quarters at work the past 5 years.

I think it's great that you're having fun with dateless stuff. If you can't have fun in this hobby, what's the point?
It surprises me that some will chime in and pooh-pooh your idea. It's not like these coins can be sold to an unsuspecting buyer as MS 64's.....No more than any cull can be sold for illicit money. If someone would buy acid date coins as prime material, you may as well punch out the slugs from an electrical box and tell them that they're three legged nickels.
You can't make me believe that people are that ignorant.
Good luck with your experiments !

So anyone try it, forgot one more think place the coins on an incline so the nic a date wont spread forward on the coin. And I still wonder why I found so many 1923s quarters. I bought a couple dateless and a few dates rolls from Hawaii off ebay. I have notice where ever you live closes to what mint is what coins you get in your area. Like I live in Nebraska so when new coins come in circulation they are denver mint.
