    It is a variety, because it occurs before the coin is actually struck.

    well they are in the strike it rich book as an error....

    They are technically a die variety as they are a variation of the die itself. They are also listed as varieties on lincolncentresource.com and multiple other sites.

    Correct, doubled dies are varieties. They are anomalies that occur prior to the coin being struck.

    So same with gouges, scrapes and all that. Error die, variety coin.
