Great find. Get it graded and sell it if you want the money. Call NGC & PCGS and ask if you could send in the whole Proof set and get only the dime graded. They both have a lot of experience cracking open slabs and US Govt plastic holders. That's the way I'd go. Bruce
Yeah, calling them would probably be a good idea. I'd much rather let them crack it open then do it myself. I've cracked a bunch of proof sets open before, and the 1983 one should be simple, but I'd still rather let them handle the coin, if possible. If they won't, then I'll just do it myself and take it straight from the plastic into a mylar flip, as I remember reading that this is how the prefer to receive the coins. On that note, does anyone already know if they'll accept an intact proof set when you only want one coin graded? Thanks, Kris
I called NGC today and asked this question. They told me to send the whole proof set in and they'll just grade the dime. That's what I wanted to hear.
This coin won't get the FT....it is a proof. Had it been a UNC then yes, they would have given it the FT, had it met the cirteria. Speedy
........i wouldn't worry about the dealer, he gets things a lot of times from sellers that he "finds" after the sale that benefits him. both parties should educate themselves before the transaction or don't make the sale. jmo
Well, I shipped the proof set off to NGC today to have the dime graded. This is my first grading submission ever. I'll let you guys know what happens. On that note, where would you suggest selling it? I've heard that eBay's fees have become quite steep. Any other suggestions for how I could move it quickly and for a good price? Thanks, Kris
By the way, thanks for the tip about eBay members being able to submit directly to NGC. While they don't really seem to advertise it on the NGC site, a quick Google search led me right to the submission form. Thanks!
I know but it sucks when they complain about how someone got a 1909s VDB for 4 cents cause they put it in the junk jar. LOL! Me I prefer not to know. Ignorance is bliss!
Here's an update on this, for those who are interested. I submitted the coin to NGC for grading a couple weeks ago. I haven't gotten the coin back yet, but I received the images in my e-mail yesterday. It graded PF69 ULTRA CAMEO. I'm quite happy! The images are attached. When I get this back, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. I'd like to put it on eBay, but the last few on there, including one graded the same as mine, haven't done as well as I would've hoped. Any thoughts? Thanks, Kris
I had a hunch it would go 69 but it's hard to grade proofs from pictures. You shouldn't be extremely excited about this though since '83 dimes come pretty nice and PR-68's are typical.
Kris, Congratulations on the find and the NGC PR-69 Ultra Cameo grade on the coin! Now that is one heck of a bonus for a find in a Proof Set that you paid only $5 for and you still have the Cent, the Nickel, the Quarter and the Half left over! Frank
I have watched the price drop on the no-s in the last 2 years. If you want to sell it I would send it off to Heritage. Heritage usually gets better price for the coin then you would be able to get on eBay. Here is mine!! http://coins.www.collectors-society...il.aspx?PeopleCoinID=514212&PeopleSetID=58498
