First off, Welcome to the newly renovated CoinTalk!
This Not an error of any kind. This coin has been severely abused. Therefore, Post Mint Damage. Possibly Environmental Damage as well.
Also, coins are struck Not imprinted. I see a possible "vise job" in the making. Search Results for “vise job” (error-ref.com)

I agree...this coin has been through a lot. Badly damaged but authentic.

Your coin looks like it has been in a fire.

Unless a coin has a high numismatic value attached, counterfeiting a common date would be pointless and costly.

Looks like it survived a war. Not a mint error of any type but it is definitely damaged.

I agree that it looks like fire damage, or maybe someone was practicing their welding/soldering skills.

While it may very well be, I'm not 100% convinced it is pareidolia, but certainly neither is it from the mint that way. If someone were playing around and carefully marked 1978 D with wax, and put wax on other parts of the coin, then dipped it in acid, that effect could be achieved, whether the purpose was to just play or deceive. It is not a vice job, I would think, because the figures do not appear to be mirror image.

Good example. You may want to save for future reference. Lol

That issue that looks like an 8 is smaller that the 8 in the date. Definitely not a dropped element issue which would be the only way a letter or a numeral would appear on a coin.
