It appears to be a very long, bi-level die crack. Instead of the lateral spread that is typically seen in die cracks, you've instead got vertical displacement on one side of the crack. In other words, part of the die face sank in. Nice find.

I have been searching an explanation, and I found a theory which sounds very acceptable to me. In many European countries, the dies are coated with chrome or other hard and tough layers to expand the life of the die, aswell as keeping the details unchanged due to wear. This layer could chip of the die, or begin to split, and leave these lines and blobs on the coins.

What do you guys think of that theory?

    Hi Darryl,

I received your coins today. They look exactly the same as the ones I already have, and I will keep on searching for the explanation.

I wonder if I'm missing something obvious. The planchets are nickelcoated steel. Maybe it's a problem in the planchet, with airchambers between the layers, that make the coating burst when the planchet is struck? Who knows...

    Regards,

    Jos

    Thanks Jos,

Sorry they are not unique, regardless I hope they make a nice addition to your error collection. As I know nothing about errors or the minting process (besides what I have picked up here) it is hard for me to appreciate what is rare and what is not.

    Best Regards,

    Darryl

    No problem at all!

They aren't identical, because the dates are different, and the breaks can't be in exactly the same phase.

They also will help to find the correct cause, which still is unclear to me.

They are very welcome, and I really appreciate it that Chrisild mentioned my website. Thanks to you!

    Regards,

    Jos
