DSC01290.JPG DSC01292.JPG WOW. That's all I have to say. Thank you DW Coins that made a world of freaking difference. Now to go and retake all those dime pictures and revise all the listings :( It is incredible what a difference it made. I appreciate it.

About 3 seconds of effort, using Microsoft Picture Manager (which anybody who has Microsoft Office, also has) turned you pic into this -

That's awesome. I wish I had Microsoft. I need to stop buying coins and buy a product key.

Thanks for all the pointers. Looks like I need to fiddle around with the camera and editors some more.

Consider getting a graycard. That way your camera is adjusted to the exact lighting you're using and not a pre-set estimation. It'll be the best $5 you'll ever spend on your new camera.

I appreciate it. I am not sure if my camera can take one of those grey cards. I think with the new adjustments to the camera and to the lights it is working lots better.

I'm sure it will. It's in the white balance settings and is probably labeled "user setting" or "pre-set" or something like that. All you do is using your lights and put the graycard where the coin would be and then click. The camera measures the existing lighting and sets the white balance to match that exact lighting.

Oh I understand what its purpose is now. I adjusted the settings for the lighting I am using and it changed the results dramatically. I also raised my lights 5 inches and that seemed to help a lot as well. So I guess I just need to go buy this card huh?
    I appreciate it.

You may not need to retake any of the pictures or get a grey card. The picture already has something white in it, the label. Just download a photo program, find the white balance tool and click something in the picture that you know should be white. Should do the trick.

He is correct, that's all I did. You should be able to do the sane thing with Gimp, and Gimp is free.

Yes and no. He's 100% right if you're shooting your photos RAW (NEF), then yes, you can adjust it post-shot and the result will be the same as if you did it before the shot, but if you're not shooting RAW (NEF) file, then you're simply using a algorithmic filter and it similar to actually doing it on the camera but not quite the same.

Yes, I agree you can fix the problem by adjusting the white balance on the camera.

But, you can also fix the pictures by doing what I did. Without changing anything on the camera, or without buying a white balance card.

I just don't have the programming you do at the moment GDJMSP. I do have PMB which came with the camera but it does nothing for the luster of the actual coin. I did change the white balance setting on the camera but looks like I need to play around with it some more. I mean are the pictures really that horrible? I thought they weren't half bad and with the information you guys have given me I definitely can make them better. I played around a little last night and came up with this. Still needs some fine touches but at least it took off the yellowish toning.

Consider buying Reveal lightbulbs. Their light is very white compared to incandescents.

I'm using Reveal florescent light bulbs now. Two of them actually and they are the only light source in my photo booth.

Ahhh, I understand the problem. Reveal fluorescents are very different from old-school fluorescents and so the setting on your camera is not taking this into account.

To be sure, I agree with your earlier post, that your photos look great! They really do. And I'm sorry if I've led you to believe anything different. But keep in the high level of OCD that most collectors carry with them, which comes out in a big way once we start taking images of our coins. In fact, I struggled for a long time trying to figure out why my photos do not look like Todd's and after many many many experiments and recording the small changes I was making I finally have come to a place where I'm happy with my images and would go head to head with the best of them. So I am offering you advice to help rather than confuse you. And I will freely admit, I'm a little obsessive with my photography... if you couldn't already tell!

:) Well thank you. It is appreciated and don't get me wrong I really am grateful for your assistance. I was and am getting frustrated with the images but with your tips they are turning out better and better. I just need to take some time and get to know the camera better and play around with this white balance stuff more. I will probably pick up one of those cards and see if that makes a difference. Thanks DWCOINS. and Thank you to all others that have provided information.

    Daniel
