On April 21, 753 BC, Romulus founded the city that would eventually come to rule much of the then-known world and help shape world history as a result. That year would be the basis for the dating system the Romans would come to utilize: Ab urbe condita ("from the founding of the City [of Rome]).

So post any and all of your ancient/medieval coins that mention and/or depict Roma!

Great idea for a thread, Valiant!

Not only pictures of coins belong in this thread, I think. but also pictures of that incredible city. It took me 3 decades to actually find the time to visit the city (other than on business), an experience I will never forget. The weather was not too kind, but the incredible history and flair of the city more than compensated for it. Our small family hotel was literally only 50 meters away from Domitians Arch. Remains of famous and historic buildings and places everywhere. Unforgettable.
Every body should see Rome at least once!

Great pictures, Eduard. The carved frescoes are enormously impressive.

The phoenix types of Constans and Constantius II were issued to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Rome.

But there has been some very recent discussion over the accuracy of Rome's founding date. Here's an interesting and short article, apropos to this thread, from Laboratory Equipment Magazine - of all places...

This is the most Roman-est of my Roman tesserae. Made for use in the City of Rome, by the people and for the people, with a depiction of Roma and the city's founders. And all in a delightfully crude 'plebian' style.

Guess that, if one wants to see Rome, the end of this month would not be a good time. ;) Due to the canonization of two former Popes next Sunday, there will be looots of visitors. Of course, if that is what you travel there for, have a great stay!

One time I was there, we stayed near the Vatican. Last time it was a place between Barberini and Spagna. Fascinating city with lots of history; I just wish they had better public transport ...
